There’s no doubt that this is probably one of the most polarizing election years in history.The tension can cause anxiety. According to the American Psychological Association, two in three adults say this election has been a major source of worry. Now health experts say that stress could also affect our children.Child and adult psychiatrist Dr. Judith Joseph has some advice for parents to help manage their children's anxiety during this time of unrest.She says it starts with communication. When there's a lot of stress in the environment, Dr. Joseph says that also cause the cortisol levels to also go up causing you to lose focus. It's important to talk to your children to find out how they're feeling.Next, use the election as a teaching moment and reassure them they are safe no matter the outcome. Create a project that involves kids learning about the voting process and how government works. Also, limit news exposure. Getting too much screen time can only lead to more anxiety.Furthermore, while creating a large change may be a bit of a stretch, Dr. Joseph urges parents to be honest about what’s happening in the world and focus on empowering our youth by allowing them to give back locally.Finally, encourage kids to keep a journal. TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - Hundreds of kids are waiting at shelters in Mexico, unable to get their asylum application processed, according to lawyers.They came with the migrant caravan in November. "Really quite brave of them to go through all of that," Lawyer Kara Lynum said. Lynum traveled to Tijuana with fellow lawyers from around the country in December.While in the shelter during their five day stay, she says they saw huge gaps in resources for the kids, prompting them to create a GoFundMe page."So the money is going directly to Al Otro Lado, so they're going to use it to fund those needs, they're going to hire a teacher. They're going to hire a trauma counselor for the kids, enhance security in the shelter and then hopefully hire a lawyer too," Lynum said one of the biggest issues is getting kids' applications processed."There's that list for asylum seekers, and the kids can't get on that list," saying change needs to happen, "for the children, in particular, they should be able to walk up to the Port of Entry and start the process of asylum."The roadblock, the law states anyone under 18 must have a guardian, to ensure the child is acting under their own free will."To know the background of this minor, I mean there's arguments that some of these kids are being trafficked. We don't know exactly where are there parents?" Immigration Specialist and Lawyer Lilia Velasquez said.Lynum said many of the kids she encountered have relatives in the U.S. Velasquez said the kids' parents have to sign over Power of Attorney, "the minor brings an ID with a photo, the relative brings also an ID, maybe birth certificates, then they can verify if those kids belong to that family."Back home in Minnesota Lynum thinks about the kids she met, wondering how they're faring, "I think about being 17 and a girl and you're by yourself and taking all of that on, is a big ask for these kids." 1907

In 2011, he moved to the Escondido location on East Valley Parkway. He initially enjoyed his time working there."[I liked] the customer service interaction, solving the customer problems and issues, and of course, developing employees," Girsch said. In 2014, he became supervisor for the paint department. According to his lawsuit, he noticed what he believed to be "unlawful activities concerning hazardous waste disposal" at the store where he worked."They were literally dumping hazmat down the garbage containers that was going to the landfills," Girsch said. He said he filed a complaint with the Environmental Protection Agency in late 2014 and also had numerous conversations with investigators about Home Depot violations. "I reported what I felt was illegal," he said. After that, he claimed retaliation began. He was accused of safety violations and according to his lawsuit, "repeatedly denied promotions and targeted for discipline.""I ran a five million dollar department, which was the paint department, and I was subsequently in 2017 demoted to the tool rental," Girsch said.Home Depot was fined millions in March 2018 for hazardous materials and customer privacy violations. An investigation between the Attorney General's office and several prosecutors' offices, including San Diego, resulted in a .8 million dollar settlement. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office could not reveal which local Home Depot locations were investigated, but did say all the ones inspected in the county revealed unlawful hazardous waste disposal."You will not silence my voice," Girsch said. "[Home Depot knows] the issues. They've ignored time after time, any attempts to resolve the issues."A Home Depot spokesperson told Team 10: "We disagree with his claims, which we'll address in the proper form." TOOELE, Utah — Over the past few weeks, people in Utah have been reporting mysterious packages they’ve been receiving in the mail from China. Federal officials could pick up the investigation. Lori Culley said she was excited to find two small packages in her mailbox on Tuesday. Although most of the writing on the outside was in Chinese, the label indicated there would be earrings inside.“I opened them up and they were seeds,” Culley said. “Obviously they’re not jewelry!”Culley couldn’t understand why she would be receiving mislabeled seeds from China in the mail, but at first she didn’t think much of it.Plants and seeds are strictly regulated in Utah.The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food will likely team up with Customs and Border Protection agents to investigate.An employee with the Utah Department of Agriculture picked up the seeds within a few hours of learning about the incident.Culley posted about the strange incident on Facebook, she was surprised to learn the same thing has happened to “at least 40 people” who either publicly commented or privately responded to her post. Now Culley wonders how many people might have been so curious about the seeds that they decided to plant them.“There was an article that I found in the UK saying this has been happening over there, and they are bad seeds, they are invasive,” Culley said. “I hope that it’s nothing too serious… don’t throw them in the garbage. Don’t plant them. Don’t touch them.”Employees with the Utah Department of Agriculture encourage anyone who received mysterious seeds in the mail to please give them a call so they can pick up the mail for further investigation.“I mean there’s even a possibility it could be a drug or something!” Culley said. “It just smells – it doesn’t sound right.”The Better Business Bureau is planting a different idea.Jane Rupp, president of BBB’s Utah chapter, said the incidents could just be a scam known as “brushing” where some companies will send you a product so they can post a fake review in your name.“That is rather random. I don’t think I’ve heard of seeds before,” Rupp said. “The first thing to do is Google your address and see what’s out there. Numerous things will come up when you Google your address. It’s kind of scary sometimes.”“Hopefully that’s all it is, but why?” Culley said. “We just can’t be too vigilant. We have to. However, despite putting in the extra work, 6 in 10 workers say they're making the same amount of money they were a year ago.“Despite the best economy we've seen in about a dozen years and the tightest labor market we've seen in almost 50 years, pay raises and better paying jobs are still the exception rather than the rule,” says Greg McBride, with Bankrate.com.Employers are also becoming more selective in how they give out raises, with more companies turning solely to performance-based salary increases.“There's less emphasis on this cost of living, this across the board peanut butter raise that everybody gets,” McBride says. “I think the other element here to is rising benefit costs. A lot of people are getting their raise in the form of the employer absorbing higher benefit costs.”McBride says people with low incomes have the highest chances of not receiving a raise or a better paying job because they generally don't have the advanced skills companies are looking for. Baby Boomers are also not likely to receive a raise because they've often reached their highest income potential within the company.Daniel Swart is a government consultant and one of those workers who did not get a pay raise this year.“It's pretty frustrating,” he says. “When you put in your time and you think you're progressing and your skills are progressing, but your salary is not matching up with those skill progressions.”One of his resolutions for the New Year is to find a new job.“You're almost in a position where the only way to get an increase in your salary is to look for another job,” Swart says.Experts say that can be the smartest plan.“If your current employer is not going to pay you what you feel your market rate is, look elsewhere and see if one of the competitors in the marketplace will,” McBride says. “This is an extremely tight labor market and particularly competitive in certain areas.” 1995
