SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Spirit Airlines flight leaving San Diego's airport was stopped on the runway Thursday when the plane had a hydraulic fluid leak at Lindbergh Field.The incident happened just after 9 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire Department. No smoke made its way into the cabin and no fire was reported. Crews towed the aircraft back to its terminal.No injuries were reported. Spirit Airlines spokesman Stephen Schuler issued a statement just after noon which reads, "Spirit Airlines flight 359 from San Diego to Las Vegas returned to the gate following a reported mechanical issue. The captain of another aircraft in line for takeoff reported smoke from the rear landing gear and fire officials responded accordingly. The aircraft was towed to the gate, where our mechanics and FAA inspectors discovered it was nothing more than condensation. The plane is scheduled to take off shortly.  We apologize for any inconvenience to our guests."  995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After San Diego leaders passed an ordinance allowing people to sleep in their vehicles, a group of critics say they're ready to camp in front of the Mayor’s house to reverse course or address the matter another way."I don’t think they realize that vehicle habitations were the beach community’s biggest problem,” said Racheal Allen, who's a part of the coalition opposed to vehicle habitations on residential streets. The new coalition is fighting against the City Council’s decision to repeal a decades-old ordinance that had prohibited people from living in vehicles on city streets. Now that it’s legal again the group says vans and RVs are creating homeless camps in their neighborhoods.RELATED: Allowing homeless to live in vehicles is causing problems, residents say“We have literally witnessed buckets of waste being thrown out of some of these vehicles," Allen said. "I’ve seen drug dealing out of some of the vehicles, we’ve seen bike chop shops operating."All of this, just in the month that living in vehicles has been legal again. And the coalition has been hounding the Mayor’s office to change it. She proposed South Shores parking lot because of the 200 spots and access to bathrooms.Allen said she recently received an email from the Mayor's office saying, “we are actively pursuing a new ordinance to address the public’s concerns.”"We have to put our foot down," Allen said.Members of the coalition told 10News they don’t support a plan of using South Shores or anything that close to the beach because of the impact it could have on the environment. 2483

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 90 dogs are heading across the country to San Diego to remove them from the path of Hurricane Delta in Louisiana.The dogs will land at Gillespie Field on Thursday as part of the effort to evacuate the animals before the storm hits the northern Gulf Coast, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Once they touch down in San Diego, 60 dogs will be taken to SDHS and the rest will be taken to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Department of Animal Services, and Labradors and Friends. Once the dogs are medically cleared and behaviorally assessed, they will be made available for adoption."We are grateful we can help these animals and alleviate some of the stress on the shelters in Louisiana," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "They are just recovering from Hurricane Laura and now there is an even bigger threat. When we all work together, we can help more animals and that’s what we are here for."The flight is made possible by the nonprofit Wings Of Rescue, which helps fly endangered pets from high intake or high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters.Last month, SDHS, RCHS, and Labrador and Friends took in 130 dogs and cats from Louisiana as well."An animal emergency is an animal emergency, no matter where or when it happens,” said Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo. “Hurricane-ravaged Louisiana called for help — just weeks after the last airlift brought more than a hundred animals to San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An SUV reported stolen crashed as it fled from San Diego police, killing three of the vehicle’s occupants.At around 11 p.m. Tuesday, police were near the intersection of 24th Street and Island Avenue in Sherman Heights when they spotted a silver 2003 Honda Pilot SUV traveling without its headlights on, before learning that it was reported stolen a day earlier by Chula Vista Police.The driver ran a red light while traveling east on Market Street, according to SDPD. When officers tried to pull the SUV over, the driver sped away towards Interstate 15.Officers lost sight of the vehicle. Moments later, with a police helicopter tracking the SUV, the vehicle lost control and crashed into a pole on Market Street, near Raven Street, in the Mount Hope area.According to police, two of the four people inside were ejected from the vehicle and two others were trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders took one person to the hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, but they are expected to survive. The driver and two other passengers were declared dead at the scene, police said.No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.The initial investigation revealed that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts as the vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph just before the crash, police said. 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After five days of crews battling flames, the USS Bonhomme Richard ship fire is extinguished. The day after the flames subsided, Navy Admiral Mike Gilday came to San Diego to see the damage for himself and meet the sailors and crews who had battled the fire.“The main takeaway for me this morning was really the people, and we outta be proud of them, and the parents of these sailors outta be proud of them,” said Gilday.Related: Navy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are outHe said he met with about 150 people Friday morning to hear their stories of what it was like to fight the fire from the inside. Crews battled temperatures that hit 1000 degrees, even getting as hot as 1200 degrees at one point. He spoke specifically about meeting one petty officer who told him her training on how to fight a fire from the beginning is what prepared her for the battle this past week.“That training set the foundation for the way she operated and behaved and acted over the past several days. She was very proud of what she did and the teamwork that was involved,” he said.He added that two of the factors that made it difficult to put out the fire were the high winds and the explosions.“This fire probably couldn’t have been at a worse point on this ship in terms of its source that allowed it to spread up elevator shafts as an example, up exhaust stacks,” he said, adding that “there were times when he had to back those firefighters off the ship. At one point the explosion was so great that it blew the debris across the pier and onto the ship that was across the way.”The Admiral also talked about what’s next for the ship. He said the next steps are doing a safety investigation, a criminal investigation (which he added is typical), a command investigation to look at the procedures in place and what crews did right or wrong, and finally an assessment of the structural, mechanical and electrical damage, which will be done with the help of the people who built and know the ship.The Navy has not decided if the USS Bonhomme Richard will be recovered.“I am 100% confident that our defense industry can put this ship back to sea, but the question is should we make that investment in a 22-year-old ship,” said the Admiral.A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed that the flames have all been extinguished, but crews continue to watch for hot spots popping up. 2411
