It is something he said did not work well when the schools were forced into distance learning in March.His son, also named Patrick, is entering the fifth grade. “It was tough,” he said, when asked about his online experience with school.The elder Batten and his wife both work full-time, mostly from home since the start of the pandemic. If there is no in-person instruction, they are considering participating in a learning pod, where eight to 10 families will hire a private teacher to help homeschool.“We’ll spend potentially ,000 a month per child to have a teacher that will, in a sense, do the homeschooling for them,” Batten said. He acknowledges that he is fortunate that his family can even entertain this option.“We’re going to see just an incredibly widening equity gap in our communities and I think that’s the more disheartening thing of all of this,” he added.Gina Chavez has three children in the Sweetwater Union High School District. “We [were] thrown into a situation with blinders on,” she said.Two of her children have special needs and have IEPs, or Individualized Education Programs. “It was even more challenging for them because that’s not the way they’re used to learning,” Chavez said.As a teacher, she understands parents’ frustration. As someone who has asthma, she also understands the health concerns for her and her family. “I want them to go back when it is safe for them to go back and I want them to go back when I know they will be protected,” Chavez said.Tancy Campbell’s young kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When the district announced it would be starting the year virtually, she was okay with the decision, but is still worried about how her 5-year-old son with autism will learn.“He has some of his needs met through online occupational therapy and speech therapy, but that social aspect is still going to be in the back of my mind,” Campbell said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled a small fire that threatened structures in Del Dios Thursday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the blaze started in the area of Del Dios Highway and Toyon Canyon Road on the west side of Lake Hodges. The fire burned roughly three acres and threatened two structures before fire crews were able to stop the forward rate of spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a brush fire broke out near Scripps Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon. According to fire crews, the fire broke near northbound SR-163 and Washington Street. At this time it's unclear what caused the fire. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the area as passersby drove on the roadway.  381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Family, friends and fellow Airmen gathered to pay a final salute to a San Diego Air Force pilot killed in a training accident last month. Second Lieutenant Travis Wilkie was buried with full military honors today at Miramar National Cemetery. It was a somber scene as a horse-drawn carriage arrived with the casket carrying the 23-year-old graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Wilkie's parents, sister, and new wife, Peyton looked on as members of the Base Honor Guard escorted the flag-draped coffin. Two T-38 Talon jets were landing in formation when something went wrong. Wilkie excelled in everything he did. He was a standout baseball player and honors student at La Jolla Country Day School. He continued playing ball and setting records at the Air Force Academy. He graduated from the academy in 2018 and was just weeks away from getting his wings, according to a statement by the family. Wilkie and his girlfriend had just married in October. Peyton is also in the Air Force. Military officials say it could be a couple of months before they know what caused the crash. 1308
