MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. The nations, however, should understand the common and mutual responsibilities in the global economic system.The delegates to the G20 summit will adjust their polices after consultations, but nobody will bend under pressure, he stressed.Dvorkovich said that several countries may voice concerns over China's exchange rate policies at the summits, but there will not be large-scale discussions over the Chinese currency.The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced on Saturday a decision to proceed further with the reform of the exchange rate regime to enhance the flexibility of the RMB's exchange rate.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province.The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Long March and its legacy had contributed to shaping an extraordinary China, said former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, when he called upon the headquarter of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing on Monday.His meeting with senior Chinese military leader Xu Caihou started with the memory of the Long March which set Brzezinski in mind of his trip to retrace the Long March in 1981."I learned you had retraced China' s Long March with your family before and your wife is a well-known sculptor," said Xu, who showed Brzezinski around the meeting hall where a set of stone carvings were placed portraying the Chinese Red Army and their epic Long March from 1934 to 1936."Currently China's modern construction and its reform cause are another new Long March, and to stick to a peaceful development road is China's long-term and strategic choice," said Xu, CMC Vice Chairman.Brzezinski, who served under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981, had retraced part of the route of the Long March with his family when visiting China in July of 1981.After that China tour, he wrote an article for the Life Magazine titled "An American Family Retraces Mao's Long March", in which he said "For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. It is the reminder of the spirit of national unity essential to overcome the legacy of backwardness."Looking around each of the stone carving with great interest, Brzezinski said the "incredible" and "superb" works had reminded him of his China visits over the years, in particular, the trip to review the Long March.These experience helped me to better understand China and some of its historical events, said the 82-year-old strategist.The Long March was a famous military maneuver carried out by the Chinese Red Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to combat the Kuomintang Regime.Though many soldiers died on the way of the two-year ordeal, the Red Army finally arrived at Yan'an in western Shaanxi Province after the 25,000-li (12,500-kilometer) trek, where the new headquarters of CPC was later established.Brzezinski said all these historical events had helped to shape an extraordinary China.In his two-hour-long meeting with Xu, Brzezinski stressed the United States and China should have all-round strategic dialogues and strengthen coordination and contact, and work for the peace and stability of the world.Xu agreed the two sides should properly handle bilateral relations and international issues to their mutual benefit instead of as a zero-sum game."More than 30 years of China-U.S. relations have proved the two countries can co-exist peacefully and enjoy common development. China's development will expand cooperation between the two countries," Xu added.Brzezinski is visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese International Institute for Strategic Society.
