SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Padres are making their first playoff appearance since 2006, but unfortunately, no fans are allowed into Petco Park to watch thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, one big Padres fan will get to see the action from afar. You see Chip Messenger is able to watch the game from his fifteenth-floor balcony that overlooks the stadium."I tell you what, I love being here besides the concerts and the monster trucks, I love baseball season because it's the best especially winning baseball, which we haven't seen in a long time. It's amazing, as this building wasn't even here the last time the Padres were in the playoffs."Chip is a huge Padres fan, and although he's about fifty yards from the field, he makes sure his voice is always heard."it's going to be loud, " he says. "Especially with all the other balconies, I anticipate it will be a home-field advantage. I have a megaphone and I can be as loud as I need to with the megaphone."Chip normally watches about 80% of Padres home games from his balcony and while most seasons have been pretty tough, he says there is nothing better than playoff baseball."It's tough that we can't be in the stadium, but with the energy level they know we're here, they can here us we got horns and bells and whistles. The people who can see into the stadium are definitely supporting the team." 1364

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself. The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills. The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Three of the boys were found dead in the home. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario. Police had been called to the home earlier in the month to break up a fight between Valdivia and Rosario, but said no crime was committed. San Diego Crisis Hotline: 888-724-7240 3354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo welcomed a rare bear cub to the mix last week.Zoo officials say an Andean bear cub was born to mom Alba and dad (or, sire) Turbo on Jan. 8 in the early morning hours. “We are overjoyed about the birth of Alba’s first cub,” said Chris Hamlin, animal care manager at San Diego Zoo. “Alba is showing all the appropriate behaviors of a good mother, being very attentive to her newborn. We are so impressed with how well she is handling motherhood.”RELATED: San Diego Zoo Global raises 0K for Australia wildlife reliefZoo caretakers are observing the cub and its mother via closed-circuit video to allow Alba to care for the cub without interruption. Giving the bears their space is critically important, as Andean bear cubs have an extremely high mortality rate in their first month, so care takers are being watchful but cautiously optimistic. The bear's sex is yet to be determined. But the interactions and long-term survival of the cub could led to a bounty of information for researchers.RELATED: San Diego Zoo Safari Park rhino's broken toe on the mend with new cast“The Andean forests where we work are so rugged and dense that it will be a long time before we can study the maternal behavior of wild bears there,” said Russ Van Horn, population sustainability scientist at San Diego Zoo Global. “Alba's behavior and her cub's development will suggest how closely, and for how long, wild mothers and cubs may be linked to birth dens, where we think they’re sensitive to disturbance by humans.”Andean bears are only found at a few zoos in the U.S. Also called "spectacled bears," the bears are marked with unique rings and fur around their eyes. Andean bears are listed as vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species, primarily due to habitat loss, according to the zoo.RELATED: Bonsall animal center critters help give 'Baby Yoda' a voiceSan Diego Zoo's newest member is the first Andean bear cub born at the zoo since 1993 and ninth cub born at the park overall.
