President Donald Trump’s physical Dr. Sean Conley confirmed Friday that the president is taking an experimental antibody treatment to help him fight the coronavirus following his diagnosis this morning.Dr. Conley said Friday afternoon that Trump is "fatigued."Trump is taking the Regeneron antibody cocktail, which is currently in a clinical trial. Conley said that Trump has been treated with a single 8 gram dose, which Conley said was infused "without incident."Trump is also said to be taking Vitamin D, zinc, famotidine, melatonin and daily aspirin. The Regeneron trial has only been tried on 275 patients as of this week, but the company said earlier this week that it has showed promising results.Regeneron confirmed that Trump was given the treatment under a "compassionate use request.""In the USA, this type of compassionate use program is also known as an Expanded Access Program (EAP) and is intended for patients with serious or life-threatening conditions, who do not have any viable or available treatment options, and are unable to participate in ongoing clinical trials," Regeneron said in a statement. The plan is to enroll 2,000 patients in early studies of the treatment."After months of incredibly hard work by our talented team, we are extremely gratified to see that Regeneron's antibody cocktail REGN-COV2 rapidly reduced viral load and associated symptoms in infected COVID-19 patients," said George D. Yancopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Scientific Officer of Regeneron. "The greatest treatment benefit was in patients who had not mounted their own effective immune response, suggesting that REGN-COV2 could provide a therapeutic substitute for the naturally-occurring immune response. These patients were less likely to clear the virus on their own, and were at greater risk for prolonged symptoms. The treatment is a combination of two monoclonal and was designed specifically to block infectivity of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, the company said.“The two potent, virus-neutralizing antibodies that form REGN-COV2 bind non-competitively to the critical receptor binding domain of the virus's spike protein, which diminishes the ability of mutant viruses to escape treatment and protects against spike variants that have arisen in the human population, as detailed in Science.” Regeneron said in a statement. “Preclinical studies have shown that REGN-COV2 reduced the amount of virus and associated damage in the lungs of non-human primates.”According to Regeneron, the treatment has been tried on hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients and as a preventative for those who have had close contact with coronavirus patients. So far, the drug has been particularly promising for non-hospitalized patients.Regeneron said the treatment reduces the viral load from the coronavirus, and boosts the body’s immune response to the virus. 2890

RANCHO SANTA FE (CNS) - Authorities Friday were searching for a driver who fled after crashing a Ferrari into a power pole in Rancho Santa Fe, knocking out electricity to 84 customers in the area. The crash, involving a 2012 Ferrari, was reported shortly before 10:20 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Avenida de Acacias and La Granada, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said. The crash caused the 40-foot power pole to fall to the ground, leaving 84 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the area in the dark, SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones said.As of 8:30 this morning, electricity had been restored to all but three customers, who were expected to be back on line by noon, Jones said. The northbound and southbound lanes of Avenida De Acacias were expected to be closed from La Granada to Via De La Cumbre until around 3 p.m. while crews worked to replace the power pole. 903

Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley will face Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in one of the GOP's best pick-up opportunities in November.Trump won the state by 19 percentage points in 2016.Polls have closed in Ohio's 12th Congressional District, Missouri, Michigan and Kansas. The Ohio race -- the last special congressional election before November -- is one of two taking place on Tuesday into which President Donald Trump has injected himself, turning both into new tests of Trump's tactics and sway with Republican voters.Republicans are scrambling to avoid an embarrassing defeat in a seat that the party has held for decades. Trump has backed Republican Troy Balderson, who is facing Democrat Danny O'Connor in the last special congressional election before November's midterm elections. A win for Democrats here on Tuesday would signal further danger for Republicans in the fall. The party previously lost a similar race in Pennsylvania and saw one in Arizona get too close for comfort. In the Republican primary for Kansas governor, Trump on Monday endorsed Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state known for his crusade for restrictive voting laws, over incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer. In doing so, he ignored the pleas of the Republican Governors Association to stay out of the race. Kobach is widely seen as uniquely vulnerable in a general election due to his controversial national profile. The two races will garner the most national attention on a day when four states hold primary elections: Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington.Tuesday's elections carry high stakes for Democrats, too -- with races in Kansas, Michigan and Missouri, where the progressive left hopes to defeat more moderate candidates.  1736

President Donald Trump signed two pieces of legislation into law on Wednesday that aim to inform consumers about drug prices. Both measures, the Know the Lowest Price Act and the Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act, aim to end the drug industry's so-called gag orders of pharmacists, which prevent them from discussing cheaper price options with consumers. These price options include discussing whether a medication may be less expensive if using insurance or paying out-of-pocket.At Wednesday's signing, the President called the gag clauses "unjust" and said the legislation would lower drug prices that are "way out of whack" and "way too high.""It's called the law of supply and demand. They didn't want to have that. But now we have that and it's going to lower drug prices," Trump added. Both the President and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said at the signing that they expect further regulatory action on reducing drug prices in the coming months. Some states and municipalities have pharmacy gag order bans, but the Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act, sponsored by Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, addresses banning the practice of gag orders on a federal level. The Know the Lowest Price Act, sponsored by Michigan Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, prohibits Medicare drug plans from putting a gag clause on a pharmacy in their contracts.Collins and Stabenow were present at Wednesday's signing, as well as Tennessee Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander, Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow. Some pharmaceutical industry experts say that although eliminating the gag clause is step toward consumer transparency, it doesn't address the issue of lowering actual drug costs, making it unclear how much of a tangible effect the legislation will have. The President has frequently expressed his frustration over rising drug prices, and in May, he laid?out his vision for increasing competition, reducing regulations and changing the incentives for all players in the pharmaceutical industry. The administration released a 44-page blueprint of the plan, entitled American Patients First, aiming to increase competition and improve the negotiation of drug prices, as well as reduce consumers' out-of-pocket spending on medicines and create incentives to lower list prices.Ending the pharmacy gag orders was included the plan, as well as speeding up the approval of over-the-counter medications and asking the Food and Drug Administration to require manufacturers to include prices in their TV ads.A gag order on a pharmacy is frequently brought on by clauses in contracts with pharmaceutical benefit managers, which manage most of our nation's prescription drug programs. The benefit managers negotiate prices with drug companies on behalf of insurance companies and other payers and then share those prices to retail pharmacies. They also negotiate rebates from manufacturers and discounts from drugstores. If pharmacists violate the gag rule, they risk losing their contract with the pharmaceutical benefit manager.Daniel Nam, executive director of federal programs at America's Health Insurance Plans, told Kaiser Health News that gag orders on pharmacies are becoming less frequent because these clauses are "not something they are incorporating into their contracts."Mark Merritt, president and CEO of a lobbying group for pharmaceutical benefit managers, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, told the publication that these clauses are "very much an outlier." 3635
