A Norton, Ohio, High School junior is fighting for her life after she collapsed and stopped breathing during the homecoming dance on October 19.According to the teen's family, 16-year-old Emma Pfouts is facing a life-threatening situation because of a severe asthma attack and an allergic reaction.Her mother, Christina Weigand, said Emma was placed in a medically-induced coma and suffered brain damage. A Spanish man spent his summer vacation paddling his way from the west coast of the U.S. across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.It took Antonio de la Rosa 76 days to paddle some 2,500 miles while standing on a submarine-shaped craft. He had planned to make the trip in 70 days, but suspects he drifted too far north at one point during his journey.He celebrated his 50th birthday at sea and arrived Saturday in Honolulu.de la Rosa said Monday that he's feeling a bit tired.He paddled eight-to-10 hours daily and slept every night. But he was always tired because he woke up hourly to check on his gear.In addition to a sleeping cabin, de la Rosa's boat included computers and GPS systems that ran on solar energy created by panels on the roof. A tornado has killed one person in central Louisiana, authorities said Monday.Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Calvin Turner said authorities received a report of one fatality in a rural area of the parish, which is located northwest of Lafayette. Turner said the death was due to damage in a home. He didn't have any additional details.The National Weather Service earlier issued a tornado emergency, the highest criteria for a tornado warning, for Rapides Parish, east of Vernon Parish. This includes the town of Alexandria. A large tornado was confirmed near the Alexandria International Airport.Alexandria police said there are no reports of injuries in the parish. A student gunman opened fire at a southern California high school Thursday morning, leaving two dead and several others injured, officials said.According to authorities, the male suspect, who is a student at the school, opened fire in the quad at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita around 7:38 a.m. before classes started. Authorities were on scene by 7:40 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about the shooting. The suspected gunman shot and killed two students, a 16-year-old female a 14-year-old male, and injured three others before shooting himself in the head, police said. He is currently in custody and being treated at a local hospital, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Officials say he is in grave condition.Video obtained at the scene showed the suspect taking a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a backpack before shooting the five other students and then himself, said Capt. Kent Wegener of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.The other victims include two females, ages 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old male, police said.
