SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 through National City were shut down early Saturday following a deadly crash. The two-vehicle collision occurred just after the State Route 54 connector, according to California Highway Patrol. All traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Mile of Cars. Traffic was also being diverted off WB SR-54 onto Highland Ave.Traffic gridlocked in the area, backing up onto the E St. on ramp in Chula Vista and westbound Sr-54 connector, according to CHP. Some motorists were seen turning around on the on ramp and driving the wrong direction.MAP: LIVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONSCHP reported that all NB I-5 lanes were reopened just before 11 a.m.The cause of the crash is being investigated. But CHP said it appeared a Toyota Tacoma was speeding in the emergency lane to get around traffic and caused a chain-reaction crash involving at least four vehicles. That suspected driver of that truck reportedly took off after causing the crash, CHP said. Officers were searching for that driver Saturday morning. One person died in the multi-vehicle crash. That person has not been identified. 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma families fighting to preserve a makeshift bike track are up against another setback. The land is owned by the San Diego Housing Commission, which recently hired an independent firm to do a feasibility study of the property. The firm looked at traffic, environmental factors, and the impact on schools; ultimately concluding it's feasible to build on the site. "Definitely heartbroken, this is such a special spot for our community," said Darren Miller, who often brings his boys to ride on the track. But Rick Gentry, President and CEO of the San Diego Housing Commission, says it's their job to create as much affordable housing in the city as possible. There are currently 80,000 people waiting for a Section 8 Housing Voucher. "The neighbors don't like to see the neighborhoods change, but change is going to happen, growth is going to occur. San Diego now is not producing enough housing to keep up with the rate of growth of the population," said Gentry. Miller and other neighbors have serious concerns about building on the land. "I don't know if they're necessarily opposed to affordable housing, I think they're just opposed to more development in an area that's already over-developed. In addition to just being an open space, it's a wetland," said Miller. The Housing Commission will be seeking developers for the project. They say the community will have several opportunities for input as the effort goes through the Planning Commission, Housing Commission, and City Council. 1527

He arrived to find a man lying on the ground on South 45th Street, near Willy Henderson Sports Complex. The Hispanic man in his 20s to 30s was shot multiple times and died at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.Police are searching for a white Volkswagon seen in the area by witnesses following the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Rain or shine, every first Wednesday of the month sprouts a bustling marketplace in southeast San Diego. More than 10,000 pounds of food, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, and even drinks are brought together and available for students in the San Diego Community College district — at no cost.Michelle Madrid Novak says it's about addressing the social and emotional needs of students while they're training for a new or better career, "so that they can succeed in school and they're not hungry."Jahir Castelo is studying to be a physical therapist, while also working a full time job and supporting his family. He says the event makes it easy to stay on the path he knows will lead to a better future."We don't always have enough for groceries so it helps

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart. This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country. The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round. The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. Those working in food and agricultural sectors, as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, public transit workers, and grocery store workers would be in that category.San Diego County has not said if the CDC's new recommendations will have any impact on their vaccine roll out plan.Until a wide distribution is available, the governor asks people to stay at home and wear a mask. 1734
