SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 86-year-old man was killed crossing the street in Mira Mesa Thursday night, police say. According to San Diego Police, the crash occurred on Mira Mesa Boulevard and Aderman Avenue just before 7 p.m. Thursday. Police say the man was using a crosswalk against a red light when he was struck by a 52-year-old woman driving a 2009 Lexus sedan. The man died at the scene and the driver, who police say stayed at the scene, was uninjured. Drugs or alcohol aren’t suspected in the crash. 512

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A teenager was injured after jumping from an Uber driver's vehicle on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley late Tuesday.The 13-year-old boy, who's from Yucalan, Mexico, was traveling on westbound Interstate 8 in an Uber ordered by his father at about 9:20 p.m., according to San Diego CHP officials. Due to a language barrier with the Uber driver, the teenager decided to jump from the vehicle on the transition ramp to northbound State route 163, CHP officials said.The teen was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to San Diego Police.Based on the statements taken by officers, CHP said they are not pursuing the incident as a criminal matter at this time. 707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An exclusive ABC 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune poll shows many City of San Diego voters are still undecided on some important races this November.The poll was conducted by SurveyUSA from Aug. 28-31, five weeks before mail-in voting begins.According to the poll, one of the closest races is for San Diego mayor, as both Democratic candidates -- City Councilwoman Barbara Bry and Assemblyman Todd Gloria -- are within a few percentage points of each other.The poll shows Bry ahead of Gloria 37 percent to 34 percent, with 29 percent undecided.Political analyst Kyra Greene told ABC 10News, “At this point in an election cycle, you would fully expect there would be more differentiation between the two candidates, but I think it’s a tough year because campaigns aren’t able to get out, talk to voters, so there are just a lot more people who are undecided.”Gloria’s campaign representatives said of the poll: “Our campaign has completed two polls recently and both show Todd with a double-digit lead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A team of middle school students from Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch has won a national competition in cybersecurity.Coached by Paul Johnson, a senior systems engineer at Northrop Grumman, the students learn how to catch and protect against hackers. During competitions, hackers attempt to breach networks, while the students try to identify and eject them. Called "CyberPatriot", the national championship was held in Baltimore, Maryland.The goal of the program is to get kids interested in potential careers in cybersecurity.The Poway Unified School District has CyberPatriot teams at Design 39 School and Del Norte High School, in addition to Oak Valley Middle School. 715
