There’s a new warning out by the American Psychological Association (APA) that says traditional masculine ideology has been shown to have a negative impact on men and boys.As a father and mentor, Dr. Ryan E. Ross knows expressing emotions is not traditionally what most men consider masculine. “Young men who I work with, when I see them I shake their hand and I give them a hug and I tell them that I’m proud of them and that I love them, so that they know that it's OK, and that's the kinds of things that they should be hearing,” says Dr. Ross. And he's right. According to new findings out from the American Psychological Association, traditional masculinity ideology--which also includes achievement, anti-femininity, and not appearing weak-- can negatively influence mental health and physical health. “You're taught to be tough; you're taught not to cry,” he says. “You know, you're taught certain things are cool you know certain ways certain attitudes.” That's why for the first time in its 127-year history, the APA has released guidelines to help psychologists specifically address the issues of men and boys. They include: encouraging psychologists to recognize that masculinities are constructed based on social, cultural, and contextual norms; understand the impact of power, privilege, and sexism on the development of boys and men and on their relationships with others; and reduce the high rates of problems boys and men face and act out in their lives such as aggression, violence, substance abuse, and suicide. Some people disagree with the APA’s report. In the Washington Observer, Nicole Russell wrote in part, "the APA gets it wrong from the beginning by asserting traditional masculinity holds only these traits, which are not even all negative, as negative."The study's authors say the intention is to educate and raise awareness on the unique issues facing men and boys. 1907

The US House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into whether the Department of Defense experimented with ticks and other insects as biological weapons. In an amendment passed last week, the House calls for the Defense Department's Inspector General to look at whether any such experiments were done between the years 1950 and 1975.The amendment was introduced by New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith who said he was inspired to write it by "a number of books and articles suggesting that significant research had been done at US government facilities including Fort Detrick, Maryland, and Plum Island, New York, to turn ticks and other insects into bioweapons.""If true, what were the parameters of the program? Who ordered it?" Smith 749

TULSA, Oklahoma — Pharmacists are fighting for new legislation that would keep insurance companies from telling customers which pharmacies to use. Pharmacy Benefit Managers often referred to as PBMs, are companies hired to help insurance companies save money. But Tulsa Pharmacist Chris Schiller said it's the patients who end up paying more. "They negotiated drug prices and did lower costs," Shiller said. "But since that time 15 years ago, they've used all these different tactics to make money where they've actually increased costs 1,010 percent."Schiller hopes HB2632 and SB841 will pass and help regulate PBMs. He said PBMs tell the patient what pharmacy they can use, eliminating your choice of where to get your prescription filled. "I'm hoping to see a level playing field for all pharmacies that protects the patient's right to choose," Schiller said. "Patients shouldn't be penalized to use the pharmacy they are most comfortable with." "I've been coming to Economy Pharmacy since they opened years ago," Kenda Skaggs said. Skaggs travels from Sand Springs to get her prescriptions. She said it's important to her to see a pharmacist she trusts. "They don't make mistakes," Skaggs said. "They know me and they know the meds I am on, and I trust them with their advice." Schiller said because of PBMs, local pharmacies may not be here a few years down the road."It's getting to that point, to where they're reimbursing so low, and directing so many patients out of state, that there aren't going to be as many pharmacies if we do not pass some regulations," Schiller said. 1597

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a new study resource, “Words of the Champions,” for students participating in spelling competitions occurring between August 2019 and March 2020. The Bee selected the 4,000 words for Words of the Champions from the Bee’s official dictionary, Merriam-Webster Unabridged. Words of the Champions replaces “Spell It!,” a collection of 1,150 words used by students to prepare for spelling bees since 2006. Each year, the Bee will refresh Words of the Champions by replacing 800 words. “Spellers and teachers told us they wanted more words, and we’ve delivered,” said Paige Kimble, executive director for the Bee. “This broader list was designed to challenge and inspire students and is the culmination of a year of research and development by our team.” Nested in Words of the Champions are 450 words sourced from the 18 engaging and grade-appropriate books included in the Bee’s 2020 Great Words, Great Works reading program. By reading the books, students can gain a deeper understanding of the words they are learning to spell. As they begin their spelling bee journey, they will spell many of these 450 words in classroom and school spelling competitions. On Aug. 20, Words of the Champions and other study materials will be available for teachers at Bee-enrolled schools to download from spellingbee.com. On the same day, an Amazon Kindle version of Words of the Champions will be available for purchase by members of the general public. About the Scripps National Spelling Bee: The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational program. The purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
