There’s a place called Friendship Park between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California. It is the only place along the Southern California border where families can legally reunite on both sides of the fence. Friendship Park, or El Parque de la Amistad, is a historic meeting place on the US-Mexico border that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. On most days in San Diego, the park is lonely. But on weekends, it is overwhelmed with Americans hoping to see their relatives on the other side of the border. People come from hours away just to have a brief encounter with their families. In Tijuana, during the weekdays is a different story. The beach has numerous people there enjoying themselves. Most have nothing but good things to say about the opportunity the park provides on the weekends for those seeking to see their families on the other side. “I have lived her for 20 years and I got involved in the border stuff in the early 2000s,” said Dan Watman, a member of the organization Friends of Friendship Park. “When families reunite with each other here, they can’t kiss each other or hug each other. They can only touch the pinky-tips of their fingers through a little square through the fence.”Robert Vivar, also a member of Friends of Friendship Park, has used the park to see his grandkids since he’s been deported. “My son has come here a couple of times and I’ve seen my granddaughters as well,” Vivar said. “One occasion, I was fortunate enough that the security gate was opened, and I was able to give my son and grandchildren a hug.”Vivar said the park is a symbol of the bridge two countries can build instead of walls. The park is open on weekends between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for families to see each other on both sides of the fence. 1760
The US announced major new restrictions on US citizens traveling to Cuba on Tuesday. The new regulations announced by the Treasury will block the most common way Americans are able to visit the island through organized tour groups that license US citizens to travel automatically. These regulatory changes were originally announced on April 17. At the time, White House national security adviser John Bolton said the Treasury Department would "implement further regulatory changes to restrict non-family travel to Cuba."The new restrictions will prohibit cruise ship passengers whose trips are arranged as organized tours. The Trump administration recently allowed US companies and Cuban-Americans to sue companies using property that was seized after the 1959 Cuban revolution, including cruise ship terminals and airports.Carnival Cruise Line was the first company to be sued under Title III of the Helms-Burton law, which previous administrations had waived. 970
The push to create environmentally-friendly products and to cease using single-use plastics is only gaining steam. The earth-conscious company Open Water ditched traditional plastic packaging long ago for eco-friendly aluminum. “Cans are recycled more often more efficiently than any other packaging material out there,” explains Open Water co-founder Nicole Doucet. “They don’t lose any quality in the process, so they can be recycled over and over again which is really cool.”The problem with plastic is that lately, even when tossed in a recycling bin, it isn’t always re-used. That’s because there aren’t enough facilities in the U.S. to process all the wasted plastic.Another problem with plastic?“They often don’t make it to recycling bins, so people just throw them in the trash or in the streets,” Doucet says.Open Water began five years ago, but only recently have sales really taken off. They credit an environmentally-conscious public.Just this week, Coca-Cola announced its flagship water brand Dasani would soon be sold in aluminum in addition to the traditional plastic, and companies like Coors are experimenting with ditching plastic rings for ones made out of biodegradable materialWhile those companies will now be a competitor of Open Water, the company’s founders say the end result is a less polluted planet.“Well I think it’s awesome,” Doucet says of the companies’ efforts to reduce plastic waste. “We started this company with idea we wanted to make a difference, and if we are pushing larger companies to go this way too, then I think it’s incredible. A great result for everyone.” 1618
