Shamika Burrage survived a near-fatal car accident two years ago, but not without losing something pretty important: her left ear.Now, thanks to a novel procedure performed at an Army medical center in Texas, Burrage is getting that ear back in a most unusual way.Plastic surgeons harvested cartilage from Burrage's ribs to create a new ear and then grew it under the skin of her forearm. Then the doctors at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso successfully transplanted the ear from her arm to her head.The technique -- a first time in the Army -- is called prelaminated forearm free flap, said Lt. Col. Owen Johnson III, chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.Some of the big advantages of it is that it reduced the chance of more scarring around Burrage's ear. Also, growing the ear under the skin of her forearm allows new blood vessels to form."(The ear) will have fresh arteries, fresh veins and even a fresh nerve so she'll be able to feel it," Johnson said on the US Army's website.Burrage, a 21-year-old private, still has to endure two more surgeries, but she's feeling more optimistic about the future than ever in the years since her accident."It's been a long process for everything, but I'm back," said Burrage. 1295

Snapchat can't catch a break.Shares of the social media company plunged Wednesday after it changed its app again — only months after a previous redesign that ticked off users.Snap stock was down 7% in midday trading, putting it more than 15% below the price when it went public last year.Last year, Snapchat changed the app to differentiate between a user's personal friends and media superstars that a user follows. Many fans revolted. So did Wall Street.The latest changes appear to backtrack. (AP) — With the United States grappling with the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world, Florida hit a grim milestone Sunday, shattering the national record for a state’s largest single-day increase in positive coronavirus cases. In Florida, where parts of Walt Disney World reopened Saturday, 15,299 people tested positive, for a total of 269,811 cases, and 45 deaths were recorded, according to state Department of Health statistics reported Sunday.The numbers come at the end of a record-breaking week as Florida reported 514 fatalities — an average of 73 per day. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new outdoor art museum showcasing art from around the world is opening in Solana Beach. Called the Art Alley on Cedros, the museum is free to the public. The grand opening of the new alley will be held during the last Cedros Stroll of the summer.The first exhibit is surf-themed and will feature 12 surfboards designed by various international artists displayed along the alley. The entire museum was designed to withstand the elements and, after its opening, will never close.
