SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's become the first question when considering a cell phone plan: How's the coverage?In San Diego, AT&T customers may find they have better luck than other carriers, according to a study by PC Mag.Locally, 19 locations were tested around the county — from Chula Vista to La Jolla and out to the College East area — between May 7 and June 1, 2019. Testers ran speed software every two minutes on sets of Samsung Galaxy S10 series phones for about 15 minutes in each location.For San Diego County, AT&T scored the "fastest" title ahead of T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint."In San Diego, AT&T had nearly double the average download speed of the next-fastest network, with excellent reliability," PC Mag writes. "The carrier has been spreading its 5G Evolution LTE improvements up and down the California coastline, and we really saw the positive benefits this year."AT&T's average download speed was recorded at 90.7 Mbps, compared to Sprint's 51.5 Mbps, T-Mobile's 44.2 Mbps, and Verizon's 36.4 Mbps averages. Uploads over 2 Mbps were successful 97% of the time on AT&T's network, 96% on Verizon, 94% on T-Mobile, and 74% on Sprint.Overall, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon were all given a 100% reliability score. But when it came to speed of network, AT&T grabbed a perfect score, followed by T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint."AT&T and Verizon both plan to bring 5G to San Diego this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. According to AAA of Southern California, 3.5 million SoCal residents plan to travel for the holiday, marking an all-time travel record for the holiday for the third year in a row. 79 percent of travelers in California are expected to travel by car, while 13 percent are planning to fly. Eight percent will travel by other means.
