SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, concerns were raised and the release of police body camera video was requested after San Diego police officers reportedly shot a man on Sunday after they arrested him. Police say he managed to get out of his handcuffs and accessed a police gun after he was left in a patrol vehicle.On Monday, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown told 10News that officers were called to the Westgate Hotel on Sunday night for a report of a man who threatened security workers. After officers reportedly took in the 25-year-old Hispanic man, they say he slipped out of his cuffs while in the patrol unit.“It does happen but you know there's a tricky line to walk between having the handcuffs too tight where they can't come off but that also means that they can cause damage to a person that's under arrest and that's not our goal,” said Lt. Brown.She added that the suspect then reportedly broke a divider in the vehicle and grabbed a backup gun from an officer's gear bag that was in another area of the vehicle, all while he was alone in the vehicle and officers were away to process paperwork. “They were in the area of the vehicle. It's not like they were hundreds of yards away. They do maintain visual contact and there are other officers that are in the area,” she told ABC10 News.Once officers noticed, police say he fired a least one round after refusing their commands to drop the gun. They report that they fired back and struck him in the torso, but they say he still got out of the car with the gun and ignored their commands. Officers say a police canine then took him down.Community activist Tasha Williamson said Monday that the suspect should never have been left alone. “It’s not safe for the individual who has been arrested and not safe for the officers who are leaving them in the car with weapons,” she added.She's been demanding the release of body camera video within 24 hours of the shooting, like police did last week after rounds were fired with a robbery suspect.A police spokesperson said Monday that the release of the video will take longer in this case but the department is working hard to get it out and hopes to have it released within a couple of days.“[That’s] not sufficient and what that's telling the public is that when there’s no public outcry, they'll take their time at releasing the video,” added Williamson.The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.SDPD is investigating the officer-involved shooting. SDPD says once its investigation is completed, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. Police say the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers before the Community Review Board on Police Practices reviews the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a hit-and-run suspect after a woman was struck and killed in Point Loma Sunday morning.According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of Rosecrans Street at 12:17 a.m.A witness told police that a woman was standing in one of the southbound lanes. When police arrived, the 52-yer-old woman had been hit by a vehicle.The woman died at the scene and police say the vehicle that struck her didn' remain in the area.  484

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar announced Saturday that a second Marine has tested positive for coronavirus.Capt. Matthew Gregory told 10News that the patient is currently being isolated and receiving medical support aboard the base."The air station is currently conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine who may have had contact with the Marine and notify them of the situation," officials said.The identity of the Marine is being withheld due to privacy restrictions, but Gregory said the Marine resides on base and was not on leave."The Marine self-reported to the Miramar medical clinic with symptoms and was ultimately transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego for testing," said Gregory.The news comes after it was reported Thursday that a Marine stationed at MCAS Miramar had tested presumptive positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state. The patient was visiting family which is where officials believe he contracted the virus, officials on base familiar with the matter told 10News.Both cases are currently in isolation and being quarantined in an empty barracks that was designated to treat potential cases of Covid-19, according to Gregory. "Both are fine and doing well," said Gregory.MCAS Miramar is one of four bases outside of California used as quarantine sites for individuals returning from overseas, including U.S. citizens that were evacuated from Wuhan last month and passengers aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship that was brought to Oakland last week. The quarantined passengers are being treated by staff with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Neither of the two infected Marines had any contact with the cruise ship passengers, according to Gregory.Gregory noted that MCAS Miramar officials had taken measures earlier this week to prepare for potential cases. He said the base implemented similar practices used by the CDC to treat service personnel."We're using the same protocols," said Gregory. "We proactively emptied out a barracks for own isolation and quarantine."Naval Medical staff are treating the two Marines, said Gregory.STATEMENT FROM MCAS: A second Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently being isolated and receiving medical support aboard the base. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar has notified the county public health agency of the positive test and will continue to take prudent precautions to ensure the service member and any individuals who had contact with the Marine are aware and taking the appropriate steps for self and follow-on care. The air station is currently conducting a thorough contact investigation to determine who may have had contact with the Marine and notify them of the situation. The Marine self-reported to the Miramar medical clinic with symptoms and was ultimately transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego for testing. The test was found positive approximately 24 hours later and the Marine was placed into isolation in a barracks room aboard Miramar designated for quarantine by service personnel. The health and safety of our military service members, their families, and our San Diego neighbors is the paramount concern of the command as the events around COVID-19 continue to unfold.
