It was a moment one lucky Norfolk, Virginia couple didn’t know was coming.Derek Page and his fiancée, Veronica Singer, got a one-of-a-kind gift Sunday for their upcoming wedding in October.“I knew my brother was planning something, but I had no idea it would be this,” explained Derek.Derek’s brother, Alex Page, planned the surprise after coming across a Facebook post.“Instead of getting something off their registry, something that’s replaceable, I just thought it’d be a fun, unique different gift that creates a lasting memory,” said Alex Page.32-year-old Miles Hoyle surprised the couple on their porch by playing a variety of songs on his accordion. The accordionist has been playing the squeezebox for 13 years.The performances are something he calls 'Accordion-at-your-Door' where Hoyle plays songs for special occasions and celebrations - one note and one doorstep at a time.“I enjoy it a lot,” Hoyle said. “I think it helps bring them a little joy too, at least I hope so.”Hoyle started playing outside of people’s homes before the pandemic but said business ramped up right after the stay-at-home order went into effect.“I’ve also played outside a few restaurants on their porches,” he said.Hoyle also plays the accordion in his two bands, The Fighting Jamesons and Mosquito Cabaret, but as the COVID-19 crisis put most live entertainment on pause, his solo performances picked up traction.“I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Hoyle said.The final song Hoyle played for the couple was Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love.” The couple applauded after the 15-minute show ended. Derek Page said the surprise left them with lasting memories.“I could not have even expected this, not in a million years,” he said. “This was amazing. INDIANAPOLIS — In a rematch from four years ago, Democrat J.D. Ford beat Republican incumbent state Senator Mike Delph.As of Wednesday morning, Ford had a six-point lead on Delph for Indiana's Senate District 29.Ford is the first openly gay person elected to the Indiana General Assembly. "I think it's really time for us LGBTQ+ Hoosiers to have a voice in our General Assembly," Ford said.In 2014, Ford lost to Delph by about 2,300 votes for the District 29 Senate seat. Delph had been serving in the Indiana state Senate since 2005. In November 2017, he was sent to Puerto Rico to help with the recovery from Hurricane Maria. In 2014, Delph tweeted his frustration about a delayed vote on a gay marriage ban. In new guidance released on Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says new mothers can breastfeed if they either have COVID-19 or suspect they have the virus.The CDC said that the change comes as new evidence suggests that babies cannot get the coronavirus from breast milk.The agency stated that when researchers added COVID to breast milk, it became inactivated via pasteurization.Monday's news is in contrast to what the CDC thought in June when they were less sure it was safe.For mothers who don't have COVID-19 and have not come into contact with anyone who has the virus, the CDC said they do not need to take special precautions when feeding at the breast or expressing milk.For mothers who might have the virus or have come into contact with someone who has the virus, the CDC recommends the mother and the child being breastfed should quarantine together at home for 14 days.Mothers should also wear a mask when breastfeeding, the agency said. 978

It’s not always what you teach, but rather how you teach.And at the University of California, Irvine, lecturer Thomas Eppel, Ph.D. is helping educate others for the digitally driven world.“I spend more time, or at least as much time, teaching online as I do in a traditional face-to-face format,” he said.Eppel is talking about is UCI’s Digital Learning Lab at the Paul Merage School of Business, a full-on production studio designed for remote learning which was built before COVID-19 forced campuses to close.“I always say the Paul Merage School of Business was maybe the most prepared school, certainly here on campus, when the pandemic hit,” Eppel said.He believes the digital learning lab offers three distinct advantages to traditional learning: convenience, flexibility and mastery.“To be able to watch a video over and over again and until you truly master the material, I think is another huge advantage of online education,” Eppel said.It's an academic advantage students say has helped them prepare for life post pandemic.“In terms of COVID, I think it did mean we were better prepared for what was happening,” said Sarah Kutner, an MBA candidate at UCI.Kutner has taken online classes at other schools before but says the DLL is online learning at a higher level.“I think it definitely has moved our transition because we already did have some focus on how can digital technology augment our learning experience,” she said.With more colleges transitioning to remote learning, a lot of them are reaching out to leaders at UCI, looking at ways they can improve their digital learning experiences.“We’re also able to help our sister schools here at UCI along with the central campus,” said Natalie Blair, UCI’s director of digital learning.She says with more schools investing in this kind of education, her staff is committed to helping others.“We’re definitely leading and if you stop learning you stop leading,” Blair said. “So, we’re always iterating and improving our methods.”Blair added that even though more students are now learning from a distance, this technology means that they’re not learning alone. 2130

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of death of 26 teenage girls whose bodies were recovered in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday.The girls, aged 14-18, are believed to have been migrants from Niger and Nigeria who had embarked on the treacherous route to Europe from Libya over the weekend.Lorena Ciccotti, Salerno's head of police, told CNN that autopsies would be carried out on Tuesday and that coroners would be investigating whether the girls had been tortured or sexually abused.Their bodies were found close to a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunk when rescuers arrived, Ciccotti said. Aid workers had described a grim scene: survivors hanging onto the remains of the vessel as the girls' bodies floated nearby.Their rescue was one of four separate rescue operations carried out in the Mediterranean over the weekend. In total, 400 people were brought aboard the Spanish vessel Cantabria before disembarking at the Italian port town of Salerno.Among them were 90 women and 52 minors, including a week-old-baby, authorities said.Libya is a well-known jumping-off point for migrants seeking refuge on European shores. Many from sub-Saharan Africa, are fleeing war and persecution; others from impoverished nations in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia have made the treacherous journey in search of better economic opportunities.The North African country is a hotbed for human traffickers, whose network of smuggling operations have gone widely unchecked due to Libya's lack of effective central governance.On Monday, Italian police arrested two men, an Egyptian and a Libyan accused with human smuggling.
