BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange regulator Wednesday pledged to continue efforts to manage illegal capital inflows in the second half of the year.In a statement on its website, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said it had investigated up to 3.5 million cases of international trade transactions, involving a total of 440 billion U.S. dollars, during its hot money monitoring campaign, which began in February. The statement said it had identified 197 cases of illegal capital inflow, but it gave no exact sum for the cases.SAFE said earlier last month that its investigations had found 190 cases, involving 7.35 billion U.S. dollars, of hot money inflows.Capital flows into and out of China for purposes other than import and export payments are strictly controlled by SAFE, which manages the country's 2.45 trillion U.S. dollars in foreign exchange reserves. The statement also said it would introduce new foreign exchange instruments to meet domestic market demand and support China's currency reforms.China's central bank announced on June 19 that it would further the reform of the formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to improve its flexibility. The hot money campaign was launched amid concerns that speculators were betting on an appreciation of the Chinese currency and rising asset prices.
ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,156 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 588 still missing, local authorities said. The toll stood at 1,144 by Thursday afternoon.More than 1,500 survivors are living in tents or school classrooms while 8,300 have sought shelter with relatives and friends, said Zhao Minxue, head of the publicity department in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.Water and power supplies, and telecommunication services in Zhouqu are gradually back to normal thanks to swift repair efforts.Power has been resumed in the key regions of the county seat and at 60 percent of households, the provincial information office said in a statement Friday.Relief teams are digging new wells after finding two new drinking water sources and 21 unpolluted wells, it said.Gansu had received 120.4 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations and relief materials by Friday afternoon, the provincial department of civil affairs said.Meanwhile, relief workers continued to clear the water course of the Bailong River, which overflowed after being blocked by debris, amid fears that more downpours could trigger new floods and mudslides.Rescuers tried to give dignity to the deceased as they were striving to search bodies in the debris. But this was no easy work sometimes as many bodies were buried meters deep in sludge."All the soldiers have done their best," said survivor Bai Chengxiang, 24. "If they could not find the remains of my aunt's family, I will have to accept the reality."

BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Sunday night called for more quality shows from private arts troupes to contribute to the development and the prospering of the country's socialist culture.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks after watching a Shaoxing opera that ended the three-week show season by China's private arts troupes in Beijing.Shaoxing opera is a traditional Chinese local opera originating in east China's Zhejiang Province.Li stressed that privately-owned arts troupes can survive only when their plays satisfy the market and the public. He said he hoped private arts troupes would produce more competitive shows with a positive and healthy theme and grow stronger by winning public support.Private arts troupes must be treated equally in terms of professional evaluation, social security coverage and support of artistic creation as are those state-owned cultural companies, he said.
