(AP) — Late-season rain and snow were apparently too much for a bald eagle chick in a California forest nest watched by a popular internet camera .The death of the chick named Cookie was announced Monday by the environmental advocacy group Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino National Forest."We are very sad to say that it looks like Cookie died just a little bit ago," the environmental group said. "He was up earlier but looked weak; he also seemed less energetic yesterday. This last storm was a tough one with rain first and then snow and cold temperatures."Cookie and a sibling named Simba hatched last month in the nest near Big Bear Lake east of Los Angeles. They were named through a contest for schoolchildren.Both were determined to be in good condition last week when a trained climber removed them from the nest, determined they were males, banded them and then returned them to their home high in a tree.The U.S. Forest Service tweeted that weekend rain followed by snow brought overnight temperatures down to 26 degrees (-3 Celsius) and that hypothermia was likely the cause of death.At the current stage, eagle chicks are too big to be fully covered by their mother and only have juvenile feathers, which makes it difficult to retain heat when they become wet, the Forest Service said."Rain followed by snow is never a good combination, as it begins to ice the body," the service said.A chick that dies in a nest is typically moved off to the side or covered in new nesting material."Nature can be very tough," Friends of Big Bear Valley said on its website. "The survival rate for bald eagles is 50% in the first year. We will all be rooting for Simba to stay strong and healthy."Forecasters said this week's weather will be warmer, with temperatures closer to normal for the end of May, but there will be a chance of thunderstorms over the San Bernardino Mountains each afternoon. BALTIMORE, Md. — Baltimore Police are investigating the shooting of a 5-year-old girl on the 1000 block of McKean Street in West Baltimore on Monday evening.According to an official with the mayor's office, the 5-year-old girl is the younger sister of 7-year-old Taylor Hayes who was shot in the backseat of a car in July and was pronounced dead two weeks later.Officers were called to an area hospital for a report of the 5-year-old walk-in shooting victim who was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her groin.Investigators say that residents in the area of the 1000 block of McKean Street heard several gunshots when someone looked outside and saw the girl laying on the sidewalk suffering from her gunshot wound.A person then picked up the girl from the sidewalk and drove her to an area hospital.The young girl was immediately rushed into surgery and is expected to survive.Officials believe that the girl was caught in the middle of a shootout involving suspects in an unknown car and suspects on foot. 1077

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Police are investigating a Friday night incident that left 54-year-old Jacquelyn Smith dead.At about 12:34 a.m., patrol officers were called to a Baltimore-area hospital for a report of a walk-in stabbing victim. When they got to the hospital, they found Smith with a stab wound to her chest.Despite the doctor’s efforts, she died.Investigators tell WMAR Smith and her family were driving in the 1000 block of Valley Street when they noticed a woman that looked to be about 20 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall and wearing a brown jacket. It looked like she was carrying a baby, or had something wrapped up to look like a baby, and was holding a cardboard sign that said, "Please help me feed my baby."Smith, who was in the passenger seat, rolled down her car window so that she could give the woman some money. At that moment, a man, about 30 years old and 6 feet tall with a goatee, approached the car to thank the family for the money.The male suspect then reached in to grab Smith's wallet, which is when a struggle began. Police say the man stabbed Smith in the torso before he and the female suspect that was holding the sign ran away."I'm not going to stop my car. You know, the way times are you don't know who to stop the car for," said Odella Taylor, a Baltimore resident."Think twice, look twice. I go to work early in the morning and my guards is up," said another Baltimore resident, Ellison Taylor.Police echoed that advice, saying crimes like these can happen any time."Always be aware of your surroundings. It doesn't matter if it's the middle of the day or the middle of the night. If you're driving, if you're walking, if you see something or someone that's suspicious, call 911, our officers work 24 hours a day," Jeremy Silbert of the Baltimore Police Department told WMAR.Homicide detectives are looking for the suspects. BARRIO LOGAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- Business owners in Barrio Logan are unhappy with the San Diego City Council's decision to fund the three temporary homeless tents opening on December 1st. The council voted 8-1 on Tuesday in favor of the funding. Council-member Alvarez was the only one to vote no, saying the city missed a chance to really solve the problem. The owners of Ryan Bros Coffee say their shop already deals with homeless on a regular basis. Their shop is less than half a mile away from one of the tents schedule to go up on 16th and Newton. Co-owner Tom Ryan says they’ve had people overdose in the bathroom or collapse, sick on the ground inside the store. Ryan’s staff is getting ready to see the number of homeless go up during the winter. The other two tents are in the Midway District and the East Village.  856
