SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is among those killed in the Conception boat fire off Santa Cruz Island, her coworkers in Coronado told 10News Tuesday. A manager at Nicky Rottens restaurant at 100 Orange Ave. identified Nicole Quitasol as one of the victims of the deadly fire. Quitasol was on the dive trip with four relatives, her coworkers posted on Facebook. "Nicole has worked with our Nicky Rottens Coronado family for years, and she will be remembered as an adventurous & loving soul," wrote Bryn Butolph, who described Quitasol as smart and loving."She will be greatly missed," Butolph added. He told 10News Quitasol was devoted to her dog, Peanut Butter.The family of five was among 34 people presumed dead in the blaze. All were sleeping below deck when the fire started early Monday. "The programs that we have here at Fuerte are really empowering the students to think differently. They are really empowering them to challenge the adults to rethink education," said Kristen Goodrich, Principal of Fuerte Elementary. Through various activities, students discover which of six personality traits fits them best and the careers that could be a good match.It's called the RIASEC Model:RealisticInvestigativeArtisticSocialEnterprisingConventionalOn Tuesday, education and state leaders toured schools in the district as part of the ExcelinEd 2019 National Summit on Education Reform. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido man has devoted his time during this pandemic to helping San Diego County’s homeless youth get back on the right track.Michael Shaw is the executive director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services (SoCalYES). He first spoke with ABC 10News in August while he was helping out a young man named Caleb, who found himself homeless on the streets of San Diego.“He reached out to people in our community online asking for help, he had his car stolen from him, and he had nowhere to go,” explained Shaw.SoCalYES quickly responded, and soon after, the young man had a roof over his head, a new car, and a job. He has since moved back to his home state to be with his family.“Caleb is doing great, he’s working full time, he has his vehicle still, he’s back with his family, he’s happy,” said Shaw. “When these young people need help, they need help right now. They don’t need help next week; they don’t need help in two weeks, they don’t need help when a bed becomes available. They need help now. Our big thing is immediate services,” he said.During this pandemic, Shaw and his team have been able to help more homeless youth across our county.After the ABC 10News story aired in August, Shaw said more people became aware of the services SoCalYES provides.“We had a young mother in Chula vista with a one-year-old baby who was actually sleeping outside; we were able to help her,” he said. “We’ve helped quite a few people. The amount of people since that story aired is tremendous; it’s a lot.”The SoCalYES team drives around in an outreach van, handing out meals and hygiene kits often. The main goal, though, is to connect those in need with the services already out there.“I saw the need, and I saw that there’s a lot of services already available it was just kind of connecting those services, connecting the dots. Especially during this pandemic, the ages of the kids that need help on the streets are younger and younger. We’re living through something I never even imagined, and the need is so real,” said Shaw.He started SoCalYES in 2019, connecting those in need with the services already out there, but helping others is nothing new for him.“At 10, 11-years-old I was volunteering at Palomar Continuing Care Center, Palomar Hospital Emergency Room, I was there for two or three years. San Pasqual Volunteer Fire Department, Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, it’s something I’ve done for a long time, it’s something I enjoy doing.”During a time where things are difficult for so many, Shaw takes comfort in knowing when people are down, others will always be there to pick them right back up.“It’s not just me, you know, there’s a lot of people in the background making things happen,” he said. “We’ve noticed an uptick in people who really want to help.”SoCalYES is holding a “Holiday Heroes Toy Drive” for Christmas.They have identified more than 100 less-fortunate youth and asked each person to create a Christmas wish list with a few items. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An inmate who left a San Diego re-entry facility on Wednesday was apprehended in the North County..California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said 51-year-old Larry Johnson “walked away from the Male Community Re-entry Program (MCRP) facility” on Boston Avenue in Barrio Logan Wednesday night.Staff at the facility learned Johnson’s GPS device “had been tampered with” at around 10:30 p.m. Johnson was last seen in the afternoon on an “approved pass to attend work.”Local law enforcement agencies were notified of Johnson’s disappearance, and CDCR agents fanned out to find him.At around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, CDCR officials said Johnson was taken into custody at a hotel in Carlsbad without incident. He will be transported and rehoused at Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility, officials said.CDCR officials said Johnson was in the midst of a 4-year sentence for one count of attempt to use an ID of another to obtain information, which was his second-strike offense.Johnson had been scheduled to be released to probation in May 2021. 1087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon.In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations.We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete.What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized.The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.”Ship’s shifting leads to evacuationCrews battling the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were evacuated late Wednesday night after reported shifting of the warship.A Navy official told ABC 10News that fire teams fighting the blaze were told to clear the ship and pier shortly before 11 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after the vessel “naturally settled” due to the fire and water damage and was rocking slightly to one side.By 6 a.m. Thursday, Navy officials said fire crews returned to the ship to continue fighting the fire.Meanwhile, several groups are collecting supplies and other donations for those displaced by the ship fire and crews at the scene.
