SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting this month, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will begin requiring ticket reservations for all guests.The two parks have avoided requiring ticket reservations since reopening as an outdoor attraction last June. SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California have reopened in more limited capacities and have required reserved tickets for guests.Starting Dec. 5, the two zoos will begin to require a reservation for guests. San Diego Zoo Global says the change will be in addition to health screenings and safety measures already implemented throughout the park."Due to COVID-19, in order to keep our community safe during this time and in anticipation of high demand, the San Diego Zoo will implement a reservation system required for entry," the zoo's website reads.Ticket reservations will be required for all visitors ages 3 and older. San Diego Zoo members will need to make a reservation to visit ahead of time as well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University astronomers played a role in the recent discovery of a third planet within the Kepler-47 planetary system.A team of researchers, led by astronomers from SDSU, discovered a new Neptune-size planet orbiting the system's two suns between two previously discovered planets.The planet, named Kepler-47d, was discovered using a method called, "transit method," according to to university. The method measures a level of brightness to help detect masses. "If the orbital plane of the planet is aligned edge-on as seen from Earth, the planet can pass in front of the host stars, leading to a measurable decrease in the observed brightness," a release from the school describes.RELATED: Researchers share photo of a black hole — the first ever in historyPreviously, the planet's signal was too weak to detect.“We saw a hint of a third planet back in 2012, but with only one transit we needed more data to be sure,” SDSU astronomer Jerome Orosz, the paper’s lead author, said in the release. “With an additional transit, the planet’s orbital period could be determined, and we were then able to uncover more transits that were hidden in the noise in the earlier data.”Kepler-47d is about seven times the size of Earth and takes 87 days to orbit around its suns.“We certainly didn’t expect it to be the largest planet in the system. This was almost shocking,” said William Welsh, SDSU astronomer and the study’s co-author.The entire Kepler-47 system itself is interesting as well. With two suns, it's the only known multi-planet circumbinary system. The system is extremely compact and would fit inside the orbit of Earth. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego welcomed two dolphin calves into the world within 12 hours of each other this week.The two bottlenose dolphin calves, born Wednesday at 3:50 p.m. and Thursday at 1:14 a.m., and their mothers are doing well, swimming together and bonding, the theme park said in a release.The dolphins have yet to be named.One of the calves was born to Malibu, a 21-year-old dolphin who gave birth at the park in 2009 to a dolphin named Kali, who remains at the park. The other, 16-year-old Maggie, is becoming a mother for the first time."As with any animal birth, the first few days are critical. SeaWorld veterinarians will monitor the mothers and babies around the clock, documenting respirations and nursing frequency," SeaWorld said. SeaWorld says the calves are estimated to weigh about 40 pounds and their genders will be determined in the next few weeks. 891
