SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to extend a local and public health emergency in response to the coronavirus. The board cautioned that extending the emergencies did not indicate that the general public faced any higher risk of the virus."Today's vote reaffirmed the County of San Diego's decisive action on Friday to declare a local emergency and local health emergency was the right one," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in a statement. "While these actions do not signify any increase in risk to our residents, it does clearly signify our vigilance and commitment to doing everything we can to protect the public."RELATED:Person back in ICE custody after being evaluated for coronavirus at Sharp Chula Vista2 coronavirus patients remain hospitalized, 1 person under observationMislabeled sample led to release of San Diego coronavirus patientMiramar coronavirus evacuees start petition for quarantine oversightThe two declarations give San Diego leaders the ability to seek mutual aid, potential reimbursement for their response, ensure resources to first responders and hospitals, stock pile medical supplies and hospital beds, and access to state and federal emergency funds if necessary.“We have heard myriad concerns from people and organizations throughout the County of San Diego,” said Wilma Wooten, San Diego County public health officer. “I want to assure you that the risk to the general public, related to COVID-19, is low at this time.”Last week, supervisors declared local and public health emergencies over the virus, after two evacuees brought to MCAS Miramar from Wuhan, China, tested positive for the illness.Tuesday, about 160 evacuees were released after they completed their 14-day quarantine at the base. A second group of evacuees are expected to be released from quarantine sometime this week. After the evacuees are released, the county said it will focus on monitoring travelers arriving in the U.S. from provinces in China other than Hubei.Currently, there are a total of seven patients being tested for novel coronavirus. Six people have tested negative and one person is waiting for test results to return. None of the patients have needed to be hospitalized.County health officials say these individuals will be under home quarantine and self-monitored under their supervision. 2362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University's men's basketball team has returned to the top ten in the national polls for the first time in five years, reaching number seven in the AP and Coach's Polls released Monday. The Aztecs are 15-0 to start the season, making them one of just two undefeated teams remaining in Division One. The other team is Auburn. Head Coach Brian Dutcher says the team is handling the success well, refusing to be distracted. He told 10News that the growing buzz about his team is reminiscent of the program's glory years at the beginning of the decade, when rising star Kawhi Leonard led the team to conference championships and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.RELATED: San Diego State's stadium effort gets -million donation"It makes a difference," Dutcher said. "It makes a difference in winning and losing. We're excited when this building is full. Hopefully it will be that way for the rest of the year.""Our student section is growing more and more," junior forward Matt Mitchell told 10News. "They're starting to be more and more active. It only helps the city and helps the program and helps the university."The team's next home game, Saturday versus Boise State, sold out Monday afternoon. A spokesperson says they anticipate that sellouts are likely for the team's other six remaining home games as long as the winning streak continues. 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University kicked off its 2020-21 school year Monday with almost all classes online in an attempt to keep students safe and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. While most classes are virtual this fall semester, there are many students who are still living on campus or having to go to school for other matters.Normally, SDSU would have about 7,500 students living on campus. As of the start of this school year, that number is down to 2,600.In addition to the lower number of students living on campus, the university created strict rules for moving in and having guests. The school is trying a positive messaging approach and hoping they can avoid outbreaks similar to what has happened at other colleges in the U.S.ABC 10News learned one SDSU student tested positive for the virus last week and is in self isolation.SDSU fraternities have imposed their own ban on social events this fall, and all recruitment events will be virtual with no in-person interaction.Fall sports have also been postponed due to the pandemic. The university is not testing students who arrive on campus, but testing is available on site.If students test positive or are exposed to COVID-19, SDSU has a detailed isolation and quarantine plan in place. As if having to deal with the pandemic wasn’t enough for SDSU -- students ABC 10News talked to weren't aware of the nationwide Zoom outages Monday, as classes were just beginning, and the school did not immediately responded as to whether the issues affected any of the first day's classes. 1562

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local drivers hoping to earn some extra cash are turning to peer-to-peer shipping.Kuazine King owns his own production company specializing in hip hop.  Business is good, but he still needs to supplement his income.  The problem?"I'm always on the road.  I have artists ... I need something that gives me ultimate flexibility but also good pay," said King.Ten months ago, King signed up to drive for Roadie, a peer-to-peer shipping app that launched in San Diego about a year ago.  The Atlanta-based company matches people and businesses with stuff to send, with drivers headed their direction. On a recent morning, 10News stopped by King's home in Del Cerro and watched as he scrolled through a list of delivery jobs.  After a few seconds, he chose one.  Delta Airlines needed someone to pick up a bag from Lindbergh Field."I'm going to take it to Carlsbad for ," said King.10news rode along as he headed to the airport picked up his package from the Delta office.  It was a surfboard, one of two airport pickups he got that morning, both bound for North County.King says on a given day, he can complete about six deliveries and earn about 0.  He likes the pay and the power over his schedule."Uber is flexible, but this is the ultimate flexibility," said King."The whole idea is to tap into unused space already on the road to make delivery more efficient, more cost effective, more sustainable and faster than any other delivery method," said Jamie Gottlieb, Content Manager at Roadie.King says all that adds up to another perk: happy work days.        "I don't think I've ever delivered to a person who hasn't been happy to get their bags.  They're always happy!" said King. 1795
