CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- When it comes to business in Carlsbad, there is plenty of action -- as in action sports.Inside a building on Newton Drive, a profound change in sports technology is in full swing - after swing."It's a new era for sports information. I think analytics is going to take the game to the next level," said Roger Weingarth, President and CEO of Blast Motion. The company's technology uses a sensor that attaches to the end bat, as high-powered cameras record everything measurable, from bat speed to body rotation. That is a big edge in training athletes and a boon for coaches in search of data for recruiting.Among the company's customers: thousands of high school baseball programs and hundreds of college baseball and softball programs, along with nearly all Major League Baseball teams. For the last decade, Blast Motion has called Carlsbad home. The company has some 80 employees, most of them in Carlsbad. "Having this wonderful combination of education, engineering talent - as well as authentic athletes - is relevant and very important for our success here in Carlsbad. People are very active here, active in sports," said Weingarth.About five years ago, Chris Crawford was one of those athletes. He was a surfer who was tired of getting his car dirty. He invented a pressurized portable shower in his garage in Carlsbad, showed it off at the city's street fairs, before a Kickstarter campaign, viral video, and an appearance on the show Shark Tank helped lead his company Rinsekit to success. The company is one of more than 15 firms that helped turn Carlsbad into an action sports hub. Other companies include GoPro, Prana, Spy Optic and Reef."Carlsbad has a neat energy to it. There is a culture of thinking people that are smart that want to be here. They have access to capital and other resources all around," said Crawford. In all, the action sports business employs nearly 1,900 people in Carlsbad. Employment in that cluster is about 50 times the national average. In a recent 10-year stretch, some 1,700 patents were issued to action sports companies in Carlsbad. 2111

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Ocean views, seafood and southern hospitality are what travelers can expect when visiting Charleston, South Carolina.“Charleston is a tourist destination," restaurant owner Eli Hyman said. "I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”Multiple publications, including Conde Nast Traveler, have ranked it as the number one small city to visit in the U.S. Seventh generation Charlestonian Michael Trouche is an expert on tourism in the city. He’s the owner of Charleston Footprint Walking Tours.“We are unique to America," Trouche said. "We have so many things here that are appealing. We’ve got this magnificent, beautiful, well-preserved city in this large contiguous area of about four-square miles, this wonderful climate with all kinds of blooming gardens and trees. You’ve got Charleston right on the waterfront, right on the Atlantic Ocean… and of course... a great southern hospitality. Charleston has always been known as being a very friendly city, so people just love it. People keep coming here and they keep coming back.”However, the past eight months and counting have been a nightmare for business and restaurant owners like Eli Hyman of Hyman’s Seafood.“It’s kind of spooky quiet... it’s eerie," Hyman said. "Because normally these streets would be bustling in the fall. It’s beautiful weather.”Like most places across the country, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the city hard. Robert Smith is the owner of a local marketing company called The Chart Group.“It almost was like overnight," Smith said. "First we heard about this virus overseas, and next thing you know we’re shutting our city down.”Considering the Chart Group offers video production and content creation for Charleston businesses, Smith depends on a thriving tourism industry. As everything shut down, his clients could no longer pay for his services. He too had to furlough employees.“Tourism within the last 30 or 40 years has become a major component," Trouche said. "It’s multi-millions of dollars in revenue for the city and for businesses and so it is a big player economically in Charleston.”Some businesses have closed forever and those that have survived had to let go of staff.“We had a staff of close to 200," Hyman said. "We’re down to about 130. We have a significant amount of them – about 40 or 45 – that have been with me for 15 years, so I have no choice but to keep my doors open. I’m going to do it for them.”Walking tours around the city only takes one person and Trouche says even that has been a struggle.“I typically give six day’s worth of tours and many times twice a day. I’ve gotten to the point where I may be giving two or three tours in an entire week.”Thankfully, there is hope. Business owners say tourism dollars are coming back as restrictions have been lifted and people are feeling more comfortable leaving home, especially on weekends. According to Erin Francis-Cummings, the president and CEO of Destination Analysts, research confirms that’s likely true.“Just last week when we surveyed American travelers, one in five said they felt like people in their personal networks were traveling more. They feel like they’ve observed that,” Francis-Cummings said.As we learn more about the virus and what can best protect us, Francis-Cummings says more people are feeling safe about traveling. However, if tourism businesses want to do well, she says they need to show that they care about the safety of their customers.“If they have the protocols in place and people feel safe, they will get business.”Francis-Cummings predicts there will be even more travelers once we have a vaccine. In the meantime, Robert says many are eager for another stimulus package from the government.“Helping these businesses through the pandemic and getting back on their feet in our opinion is the most important thing,” Smith said.Taking it day by day, business owners say they pray they’ll come out of this strong.“With God’s good grace we’ll get out of this soon," Hyman said. "Come to Charleston and come to visit.” 4054

Campbell Soup has disavowed claims made by a company lobbyist that George Soros' foundation is assisting a caravan of migrants bound for the United States. In a tweet sent on Monday, Kelly Johnston, Campbell's vice president of government affairs, wrote that the Open Society Foundations has arranged for "troop carriers" and "rail cars" to support the caravan, which formed in Central America. Johnston's Twitter account has been deleted, and the tweet is no longer online. New York Times reporter Kenneth Vogel posted a screen grab of Johnston's tweet on Tuesday."The opinions Mr. Johnston expresses on Twitter are his individual views and do not represent the position of Campbell Soup Company," a company spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday. 760

Carnival Cruise Lines announced Thursday that they are canceling several cruises until early 2021 due to COVID-19.In a press release, the cruise line company said that all P&O Cruises to the Caribbean were canceled until Jan. 2021, and cruises from and to Southampton, Arcadia, and Aurora were canceled through February.P&O Cruises is part of the Carnival Corporation.“With evolving restrictions on travel from the UK, unfortunately, it is necessary to cancel these itineraries," P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said in the news release. "These further cancellations vary according to ship as well as complexity and length of itineraries, advice, and guidance regarding ports of call and current air availability for fly/cruises. We are continuing to monitor the overall situation closely and will certainly reintroduce cruises should the opportunity arise, and it is feasible to do so.”Carnival also stated that they were delaying the return of Carnival Paradise, Carnival Magic, Carnival Valor, and the Carnival Spirit until next year "after scheduled dry dock enhancements are completed in the first half of 2021.""This extended pause in our operations has also impacted shipyard availability, and we've had to reschedule required dry docks," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line in the release. "As we continue to work through issues related to our eventual return to operations, we are committed to providing our guests and travel agent partners with certainty where we can, although we regret disappointing our guests. We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our guests and hope to welcome them back onboard soon."According to the Washington Post, the cruise line company also plans to sell 18 ships, which makes up 23% of its fleet. 1792
