SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. Williamson, a 13-year educator, has trained fellow teachers on science and engineering practices, led the creation of Wolf Canyon's Design Den makerspace and mentored student teachers from multiple teaching programs.The eventual award winners from each state receive a ,000 award from the NSF, receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, and are traditionally honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. 2096

Offered at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) class is a noncredit/non-fee course. It supports people recovering from ABIs like brain trauma, stroke/aneurysm, brain tumor, brain infection, and anoxia. SDCE's ABI curriculum equips students with the tools needed to achieve daily tasks and long-term goals to support their transition back into career and education. Classes emphasize rebuilding a sense of self through cognitive retraining, personal development, communication, academic skills, vocational exploration, coping strategies, creativity development, and advocacy awareness.For traumatic brain injury survivors like Marine Corps veteran Mario Sanders, the program has been lifechanging."No one is ever prepared for life with a brain injury, this program definitely gave me the strategies, the techniques; it made me able to cope with it, it made me able to live with it," said Sanders. The Camp Pendleton Marine was in a severe car accident in 2016. He was hospitalized for six months and had to re-learn how to walk again."One minute I'm being a Marine, the next I'm in the hospital confused and dazed, I couldn't walk, I had no idea what happened," said Sanders. Today he suffers from memory problems and weakness on his left side, but Sanders is far more accepting of his injury."Life with a brain injury is hard, but it's not impossible."Sanders is dually enrolled at San Diego Miramar College and will complete an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Degree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A connecting trolley line to San Diego's airport has taken another step closer to reality.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly signed an exclusive agreement at the Pentagon Thursday to redevelop the former SPAWAR facility, now "NAVWAR," into a transit hub. SANDAG and Navy plan to collaborate on a hub similar to "Grand Central Station" adjacent to the airport, as well as a modernized complex for Navy use."This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. "The fact that it was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Navy inside the Pentagon sends the undeniable message that there is momentum and energy in both Washington, D.C. and San Diego to do something truly special with this property. It marks a huge next step in revitalizing this area into a civic asset that serves the U.S. Navy, the community and our regional transportation network."According to SANDAG, one option being explored last year would support housing, retail, and office space. Some of that funding could come from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which signed a 10-year agreement with airlines to fund airport public transportation.In September 2019, SANDAG officials and then-Navy Secretary Richard Spencer signed a memorandum of understanding to explore their visions for the 72-acre site off Interstate 5.Currently the site is home to more than 5,000 personnel, including Naval cybersecurity and information officials with Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A dog was rescued and reunited with his owner after getting into the water off Sunset Cliffs Sunday.The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said the dog somehow got into the water but could not get back to its owner, prompting two lifeguards to spring into action.The lifeguards helped pull the dog onto a rescue board and brought him safely back to shore.The dog was not hurt.Lifeguards said the area is known to be dangerous for dogs. 460
