TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Coca Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, will begin operations at its largest bottling plant in China, a 900-million-yuan (132-million-US dollar) investment in Luohe City of central China's Henan province, by the end of October this year."We are very positive and committed to our growth here in China," said Glenn Jordan, president of Coca Cola Pacific Region, during an exclusive interview with Xinhua while attending the fourth Summer Davos forum held in north China's port city of Tianjin, on Monday.The soft-drink giant already operates 39 plants in China. It opened three new plants in Jiangxi Province, Hubei Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last year. Also, it now has two factories under construction, including the largest one in Henan and the other in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Statistics from the company showed its investment in the new plant in Hubei Province has reached 600 million yuan, while the cost of the two-phase project in Jiangxi Province added up to 250 million yuan.Jordan said these are all parts of Coca Cola's three-year, 2-billion-US dollar investment plan in China announced last March, and the project is now "well on track" in terms of infrastructure, marketing and product development.Jordan believes the expansion was good for both sides. "On average, we are hiring around 10 people per day in the Coca Cola system and putting almost 1,000 coolers per day in the market."The investment package also includes a 90-million-US dollar innovation and research center in Shanghai. One new beverage created at the center last November was Minute Maid Pulpy Super Milky, which combines fruit juice, milk powder, whey protein and coconut bits to create a creamy fruit-flavored dairy drink."The Shanghai research center has been very productive and very rewarding," Jordan said, "We have already taken some of its innovations and technologies to other parts of Asia and to the world's markets."As for the business environment in China, Jordan believes the country is moving in a better direction, as it has continuously improved its business operating rules and regulations."We have been here for more than 30 years, during which China has changed rapidly. China has to adapt and evolve its strategies, and we can look back to our track record and find our way to the current changes," he said."We are very confident about the future of China and the future of our business here," he said, "In the case of the beverage sector, I don't think there is really something in China hurting us or that is not conducive to good business."

SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wang Lihua sent her son to a Shanghai rehabilitation center for the disabled when he was three years old. Now about to turn six, her son, who has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination, has regained use of some parts of his body."When he first came to the center, he was not able to crawl, kneel, or stand. Now he has not only learned these abilities, but also learned to walk, even just for a short distance," Wang said.Opened in 1999, the Shanghai Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Center for the Disabled specializes in medical, educational, engineering, and vocational rehabilitation for the disabled.Feeling timid and afraid of the strange new environment at first, Wang's son now very much likes the therapists at the center."The therapists here work very hard, since they provide training to children with cerebral palsy one at a time from dawn to dusk. The children have a busy day as well. My son spends his day either having meals or training," Wang said.The hard work has paid off. Her son has learned by heart many lines of a nursery rhyme and Chinese poem, as well as addition and subtraction.Largely satisfied with the results of the rehabilitation, Wang said she was thinking about sending her son to a regular primary school next year.According to Xu Shenglin, the center's vice director, the center treats children suffering from cerebral palsy or autism with a combination of therapies such as acupuncture, massage and sports, and every child with cerebral palsy is treated in a one-on-one rehabilitation program which has an effective rate of 95 percent.The center also runs a course for parents of children with cerebral palsy to teach them about home rehabilitation.Monthly fees for each child with cerebral palsy at the center is 3,000 yuan (495 U.S. Dollars), with 60 percent covered by health insurance. Families with children with cerebral palsy receive an annual subsidy of 10,000 yuan from the Shanghai municipal government.In Shanghai, the economic center of China, there are 942,000 disabled people, accounting for 5.29 of the city's population. The city's government has spent about 4.4 billion yuan in aid programs for the disabled since 2007, which has helped set up over 2,000 aid institutions and allows 100,000 disabled people to receive subsistence and other kinds of government subsidies.Under a program that offers health and medical services at home, some 130,000 disabled people have received basic rehabilitation services and 160,000 have received health check-up service.The government in Shanghai has also financed at-home care for 15,000 unemployed and severely disabled people who are not committed to any institutions or do not receive any subsidy for day care.In China, the rights of the disabled have always been a priority of the government. A national human rights action plan for 2009 and 2010 specifies targets about guaranteeing the rights of the disabled.The Chinese government's efforts to guarantee these rights are evident at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo. Some 1.86 million people have visited the first-ever pavilion dedicated to the disabled in the history of the World Expo, as of the middle of October."The number of visitors far surpassed our expectations. BEIJING, Oct.12 (Xinhua) - Auto sales in China continued to expand last month, raising the forecast for annual sales to a record 17 million units this year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said here Tuesday.Sales of automobiles rose 16.89 percent in September from a year earlier and 24.69 percent from August to 1.56 million units, while auto production was up 16.94 percent year on year to 1.59 million units, said CAAM.In the first nine months of this year, auto production reached 13.08 million units, up 36.1 percent from a year ago.A total of 13.14 million units of domestically-made auto vehicles were sold in China in the same period, up 35.97 percent year on year.Sales for the Jan.-Sept.period are quite close to the total number of vehicles sold last year, when China overtook the United States to become the world' s largest auto maker and auto market with production and sales hitting 13.79 million and 13.64 million units respectively.China' s annual production and sales of new autos are likely to surpass 17 million units this year, CAAM predicted, matching the highest annual level ever reached in the United States.Although the expansion in the sector has brought in an industrial boom and played an important role in China' s domestic demand, it has also triggered widespread concerns over the country' s energy capacity, pollution levels and rising traffic pressures.For general citizens and city planners in China, the increasing number of traffic jams is the most obvious problem in enjoying a life behind the wheel.In Beijing, the rising number of private cars, along with heavy rainfall and a spurt in holiday travel, caused a record 140 traffic jams in a single Friday evening last month. However, that figure rose to 55 percent by the end of August this year.Xu Changming, an official with the State Information Center, said the auto market's growth should be maintained at around 1.5 times the growth in the country's gross domestic product (GDP).This means China's auto sector growth should rise less than 13.5 percent, since GDP expanded by 9.1percent in the past year.But according to Edward Prescott, the Nobel Economics prize winner in 2004, China' s vehicle production and sales may both range as high as 40 million units by 2020, and reach 75 million in 2030.Chinese officials had also warned that an unchecked expansion of China's auto industry encouraged by local authorities could harm the wider economy, and that excess capacity must be "resolutely" stopped.Chen Bin, head of industrial coordination at the National Development and Reform Commission, the nation' s economic planning body, said last month at a forum in Tianjin that local governments had been making "blind" efforts to open new factories and expand capacity, which could hamper sustainable development of the national economy.In Beijing, auto emissions were responsible for 50 percent of the city' s gaseous pollutants in 2009, he added.He said local authorities should avoid setting unrealistic output quotas for auto makers, and should end preferential land and tax policies for them.He said the government should also strengthen supervision of industrial efficiency data to guide reasonable resource allocation.China's auto industry is not only facing the tough task of boosting domestic consumption, but is also responsible for maintaining sustainable and coordinated economic and social development, Chen said.
