SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Unified School District has started voluntary COVID-19 testing for students and staff at several elementary schools, under a partnership with UC San Diego Health, it was announced today.The testing initiative is designed to help to keep students and staff safe while expanding in-person learning amid the pandemic. The board will consider ratifying that agreement Tuesday.Eventually, the testing program could be expanded to include all 100,000 students within the district and its more than 10,000 staff members. ``Scientific models from our colleagues at UC San Diego show we can prevent 90% of all transmissions on campus with effective testing every two weeks,'' Marten said. ``That level of protection will not only help us reopen schools; it will help us keep them open, and avoid the back-and-forth, open-and-shut problems that have plagued other school systems.''Free COVID-19 tests will be available to students and staff at 10 district campuses this week -- Rolando Park, Penn, Foster, Gage, Mason, Vista Grande, Dingman, Jerabek, Hearst and Benchley Weinberger elementary schools -- with additional testing to be offered from Jan. 4-15.The goal is to test every student and staff member every two weeks, starting with those on campus for the first phase of school reopening.``The implementation of COVID-19 testing is an important tool for district campuses in identifying and limiting the spread of the coronavirus,'' district physician Dr. Howard Taras said. ``Although voluntary, I strongly urge student and staff participation in the testing program for their health and the health of others.''The campuses were selected based on generally higher local case rates of community infections, combined with student and staff participation rates in appointment-based learning.The tests will be administered in campus auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms by medical professionals from UCSD Health in conjunction with staff members from the district's health office. The procedure, which takes about 15 seconds, involves swabbing both nostrils. The swab itself is inserted roughly the same distance as a common nasal spray applicator.``The science is clear when it comes to the importance of COVID-19 testing, even if a person has no symptoms,'' said Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. ``It is a critical component in slowing and containing the spread of COVID-19, along with measures like masking, social distancing and proper hand hygiene. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24. In the master bedroom, a lock box was emptied of personal documents and some six pieces of jewelry, including a set of pearls belonging to her mom.Both her mother and father passed away two year ago."You wear something that's hers, you feel like she's close to you again ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is pleading for their father back after they say officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended him on June 20. Their father is expected in court on July 18. Gilberto Mayorga's children say it's hard to imagine life separated from him. "He's been here's since he was 17, 16. All he knows is San Diego. All he knows being here," his daughter, Eugenia Mayorga said. They say their father met their mother and started their family. He was deported but quickly came back so he could help their mother, who was struggling to support their family. "As soon as he came back, I remember having a roof over our heads," his daughter Bridgette Rembao, said. "I feel like the only crime he made was to come back and financially support us." ICE painted a different picture of Mayorga. ICE officials say he had previously been removed from the country five times. He served 100 days in federal prison for illegally entering the country. They say he has two felony criminal convictions for drug offenses and was sentenced to more than than five months in jail. He was also convicted of two other misdemeanors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego resident was extradited back to the U.S. to face terrorism charges in federal court.Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, a 34-year-old Canadian national, appeared in court Friday on charges that he conspired with several other Canadian and U.S. citizens to provide material support to terrorists in Syria.Prosecutors said Douglas McCain, known as the first American to die fighting for the Islamic State in 2014, was among those Abdullahi conspired with between 2013 and 2014.Prosecutors say Abdullahi and co-conspirators provided personnel and money to individuals engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, including the killing, kidnapping, and maiming of persons. Officials added that Abdullahi facilitated the travel of at least three Canadian nationals and two U.S. citizens to Syria to join and fight with ISIS.Those individuals were reportedly later killed fighting for ISIS.As part of their plans to provide financial support, Abdullahi's co-conspirators encouraged others to commit crimes, such as theft, prosecutors say. Abdullahi is charged with committing an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Canada to finance travel."Terrorist networks like ISIS cannot exist without supporters," said U.S. attorney Robert Brewer. "Protecting Americans from terrorists is our highest priority, and we will work hard to bring justice to those who provide material support to foreign terror organizations."Abdullahi was detained and deemed a flight risk and danger to the community following his hearing Friday.
