(AP) — A medical team at a southwestern Louisiana hospital worked through the night to care for 19 tiny babies as Hurricane Laura slammed the region. Officials at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women first had to transfer the 19 babies in the neonatal intensive care unit to the main hospital in the system after it became clear that the women's hospital could be swallowed in storm surge. Then the team of two neonatal nurse practitioners, 14 nurses, three respiratory therapists, and a doctor cared for the babies while the wind howled around them. But Dr. Juan Bossano said the babies seemed to weather the storm just fine. 638

YOKOHAMA, Japan. – The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced Tuesday that travel restrictions have been placed on all remaining passengers and crew of the Diamond Princess, the cruise ship quarantined off the coast of Japan because of a COVID-19 outbreak on board. Under the restrictions, the more than 100 United States citizens still on board the ship or in Japanese hospitals will be prevented from returning to the U.S. for at least 14 days after leaving the Diamond Princess. The restrictions apply to the ship’s other passengers and crew as well. “After disembarkation from the Diamond Princess, these passengers and crew will be required to wait 14 days without having symptoms or a positive coronavirus test result before they are permitted to board flights to the United States,” said the CDC in a press release. If an individual from the cruise arrives in the U.S. before the 14-day period ends, the CDC says they will still be subject to a mandatory quarantine until they have completed the 14-day period with no symptoms or positive coronavirus test results. The CDC says there may be additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the remaining passengers on board the Diamond Princess, because of their high-risk exposure. The CDC says these travel restrictions have been put in place to protect the health of the American people. “We continue to believe that the risk of exposure to COVID-19 to the general public in the United States is currently low,” wrote the CDC. “The U.S. Government is taking these measures to protect the Diamond Princess passengers and crew, their loved ones, the traveling public, and communities within the United States.”Sunday night, two charter flights carrying Diamond Princess passengers landed at military bases in California and Texas, starting the clock on another 14-day quarantine period to ensure passengers don’t have the new virus. A total of 14 of those passengers were confirmed to have contracted COVID-19. 1980

#China’s consulate in #Houston is not a diplomatic facility. It is the central node of the Communist Party’s vast network of spies & influence operations in the United States. Now that building must close & the spies have 72 hours to leave or face arrest. This needed to happen.— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) July 22, 2020 334

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) – Firefighters Tuesday fought a blaze that burned just feet away from homes in El Cajon. According to crews, the fire broke out after 1 p.m. near Main Street and Travelodge Drive. Crews could be seen fighting the blaze from atop a hill in an effort to prevent flames from reaching nearby homes.Firefighters say, at one point, flames came within 20 feet of nearby homes. Heartland Fire, Viejas and Cal Fire all responded to the blaze along with a helicopter crew. The fire started as temperatures rose and humidity plummeted. RELATED: Check today's forecast"Today will bring mild Santa Ana winds with gusts of 25 to 35mph far inland to the mountains with humidity down to 15 to 30%. Peak winds arrive this morning and while the driest conditions won't arrive until this afternoon fire danger will be elevated today," said 10News Meteorologist Megan Parry. "It will be warmer today with highs 5 to 10 degrees above normal for the coast and valleys." 981

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – American students who are on a budget are opting to get their medical school education south of the border.Carlos Rodriguez is a young American man who got his white coat in Tijuana after failing to get into any U.S. medical schools. "When you receive that rejection letter, you feel like everything you did was for nothing," he says, adding, "When I saw this opportunity to go to Mexico, I took it. I was like, 'This is all [I've] got.'" MAKING IT IN SAN DIEGO: San Diego community college programs open up job opportunities According to The Princeton Review, fewer than half of all applicants get accepted to U.S. medical schools. Those who are accepted will pay an average of more than ,000 a year for private school. Rodriguez enrolled in a private school in Mexico where he says his tuition is only about 0 per month, and the cost of living is even lower. "My electricity is 20 pesos, which is not even equivalent to a dollar or two," he adds. "It's going to be a little fraction in comparison to the American tuition fees," says Dr. Eduardo Tanori, a professor at UC San Diego. He helps international medical school graduates prepare for the U.S. board exams. His students come from around the world, including Mexico. "We have several very good and competitive medical schools in Mexico," he adds. Making It in San Diego: Renting is cheaper than buying a home, study shows Dr. Tanori says the cost of medical education in Mexico is low, but the quality is generally high. He tells 10News that his students' passing rate for U.S. licensing exams is more than 90%. Another benefit to Mexican medical school is the ability to become a bilingual provider, says Rodriguez. "Medical terms in Spanish are probably a letter or two different from English, so it got easier. The more I practiced it, the more I learned it," he adds. He's now inching closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon. 1948
