SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There is new frustration for San Diegans trying to cutback their spending amid coronavirus restrictions.Some companies are refusing to freeze automatic renewals despite being closed. That's leading to resentment as workers across the county face layoffs, furloughs and reduced hours. Amanda Sullivan, a mental health professional, says she's still being billed a month for her 24 Hour Fitness membership, despite the gym shuttered. 24 Hour Fitness promises instead to add the lost time to the end of her membership. "It feels like robbery," she said. "We're taking your money, you can't do anything about it, we're telling you this is what we're offering, we'll just tack on time at the end."Sullivan said her emails to 24 Hour Fitness have gone largely ignored, or she's received boilerplate responses. Meanwhile, 24 Hour Fitness has shuttered its call center. In a statement, the gym stood by its decision, noting it also made available its subscription app that includes exercise instruction."24 Hour Fitness is focused on the continued health and safety of our club members, team members and guests. With that in mind, we have made some difficult decisions to ensure our ability to provide services to our club members and sustain our business over the long term," the statement said.The coronavirus shutdowns have prompted a variety of responses from membership-based businesses.While 24 hour is billing as normal, other gyms, like CorePower, OrangeTheory and Chuze have frozen fees. LA Fitness will only keep billing if a club reopens in the San Diego market by April 1.The San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld say they will extend annual passes to make up for the lost time. Spokespeople for both parks say additional questions should be directed to customer service. Consumer attorney Frederick Schenk, of CaseyGerry, says each subscription contract is different but he says it's always worth a phone call to ask for a refund. "I'm finding that vendors are working with their customers to come to terms with this horrible dilemma," Schenk said. "We're all facing it, and we have to face it together. So if a vendor thinks that it's going to take advantage of its members it will find in the not-too-distant future it will have lost that member and many others."Michael Weiner, a consumer attorney with Slate Law Group, said it is difficult to analyze situations without seeing individual contracts, but in general a consumer would appear to be on strong legal footing if he or she is being billed for something they aren't getting. Weiner suggested reaching out to corporate, and posting on social media if things don't change. "If they were still rebuffed, there are multiple avenues to take, from hiring counsel to speak to the company on their behalf, to filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the local San Diego Chamber of Commerce," Weiner said. A San Diego security expert shows us how surveillance cameras are getting smaller, cheaper and harder to spot.Joe Oregon is a San Diego cyber security expert who also teaches at San Diego State University. He knows how simple it is to plant and conceal hidden cameras and tells us, “You want to make sure that you're closely inspecting the room or the location you're going to.” “I cringe thinking about it just as a citizen and as a father, you know. I have children, as well,” he adds.People’s worries over spy cameras have been increasing in the U.S. and internationally. A couple on vacation in Florida found themselves on-camera. At their short-term rental, they discovered a smoke detector with a hard drive in it, recording them in bed.A couple staying at a rental in Toronto was reportedly shocked to find a spy camera hidden in an alarm clock, pointed at the bed.Engineer Brandon Schamer specializes in micro-cameras. “They hide them in the smoke detectors. Sometimes people will actually tuck them under hidden spots where you wouldn't look like behind the TV,” he says. Schamer reveals that a spy camera can be hiding in an air conditioning vent, a plant, a stuffed animal, or even a spice rack. There are numerous possibilities.He says when you check into a rental unit, use the flash light on your phone’s camera to look around to see any reflections from tiny lenses. He explains that you can also check for infrared frequencies. “It’s totally invisible to the naked eye,” he adds. Your cell phone camera can detect infrared. Schamer explains that you should put your phone’s camera in “selfie-mode” and scan the room for a purple light which could indicate there's a transmitting camera. These days most cameras can be bought online. “They're not illegal devices so anyone can purchase them,” adds Oregon.Vacation rental sites like Airbnb and VRBO have strict rules about surveillance. Cameras are allowed in living rooms but they must be disclosed on the rental forms. They're not allowed in private areas like bedrooms or bathrooms. Oregon doesn't think you should descend into paranoia, but, he adds, “It's important to have a healthy dose of concern.” 2298

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego City Council Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of adding movable tiny homes to the list of options on how to offer more affordable housing to citizens.Tiny houses are similar to granny flats, but smaller. Tiny houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are equipped with the basics for living, sleeping, and cooking. They range in size from 150 square feet to 400 square feet and cost between ,000 and 0,000.Tiny homes can help create an affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.City officials said, “A significant portion of households in San Diego can afford a movable tiny house as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The average cost of rent for a tiny home is 0 a month. A property owner would recover their initial investment in eight years. After that, the rent from the tiny house could help cover their mortgage and other expenses.”Currently, the city allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. With Tuesday’s approval, homeowners can add tiny homes to their properties.“Moveable tiny homes are a great option that naturally increases affordable housing at no cost to taxpayers. It’s a win for the homeowner, it’s a win for the renter, and it’s a win for the taxpayer,” said San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman. “I appreciate my colleagues support for this important housing reform.
