URUMQI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A key expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began construction on Wednesday in a move to improve the region's road network and serve its economic development.     The 135-km expressway will link Kuytun City to Karamay City. The project, funded by the central government and Xinjiang regional government, will cost 3.87 billion yuan (about 567 million U.S. dollars).     The road is bidirectional with four lanes. It will be completed and put into use in November 2011.     Dai Gongxing, vice chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kuytun that the expressway, also part of the national expressway network, would improve the regional transport and promote local economic development.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to "continue carrying out its functions of political consultation, democratic supervision, and participation and raising proposals in governance, in a practical and effective way."     The CPPCC should make new contribution to boosting the Reform, Opening-up and Socialist Modernization Drive and the great cause of a peaceful reunification of the Nation, and safeguarding world peace and promoting a common development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at Sunday's gathering here to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the country's political advisory body.     Other Party and State leaders present at the commemorative event were Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang. The gathering was presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     In his key-note speech, Hu described the CPPCC as a patriotic United Front of the Chinese people, a major institution of the multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, and a main form to display socialist democracy in the country's political life. BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama here on Saturday, who are here to attend the second trilateral leaders' meeting.     Hailing the progress of China's relations with the two countries, Hu said China is ready to make joint efforts with Japan and the ROK to implement consensus, boost healthy development of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership and China-Japan strategic mutually-beneficial ties.     The substantial cooperation between China and the two countries in various areas had been further expanded, he said.     Hu congratulated the success of the second trilateral leaders' meeting held in Beijing on Saturday, calling on the three nations to seize historical opportunities to further strengthen strategic trust, respect respective major interests and concerns, and make concerted efforts for mutual benefits and common development.     The Chinese president hopes the three countries to facilitate east Asian cooperation and jointly respond to regional hot issues and global challenges to unveil a new chapter for peace, cooperation and development of east Asia. CHENGDU, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has said that reconstruction work of earthquake-shattered areas in Sichuan Province must still overcome challenges before it can be judged a complete success.     Wen made the remarks while visiting the quake zone from Thursday to Saturday. It was his eighth visit to the region since the May 12 earthquake last year that left almost 90,000 people dead or missing.
