The number of people unable to make house payments on time has reached a nine-year high, according to a recent analysis of the data.Mortgage delinquencies were at 8.22 percent of all loans for the second quarter of 2020, says the Mortgage Bankers Association. At the end of June, an estimated 4.2 million Americans were on a forbearance plan, meaning they have an agreement with their mortgage lender to delay foreclosure."The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on some homeowners' ability to make their mortgage payments could not be more apparent. The nearly 4 percentage point jump in the delinquency rate was the biggest quarterly rise in the history of MBA's survey," said Marina Walsh, MBA's Vice President of Industry Analysis in a press release. "The second quarter results also mark the highest overall delinquency rate in nine years, and a survey-high delinquency rate for FHA loans."FHA, or Federal Housing Administration, loans are designed for low-to-moderate income borrowers and require a smaller down payment when purchasing a home. The survey found 15.65 percent of FHA loans were delinquent in the second quarter of 2020. That’s the highest rate since the Mortgage Bankers Association began keeping records in 1979.The survey asks loan servicers to report any loan that is not paid back according to the terms in the agreement. The high rate of mortgage delinquencies appear to be connected with availability of jobs. The five states with the largest increases in delinquency rate were New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Florida and Hawaii; all states with a high number of leisure and hospitality jobs that are now in flux because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1669

The head of Interpol, who vanished after taking a flight to Beijing, is being held and investigated for corruption, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.Meng Hongwei, who was also a vice minister of public security in China, has been accused by the Chinese government of accepting bribes and committing unspecified other crimes."(Meng) insisted on taking the wrong path and had only himself to blame (for his downfall)," the country's top law enforcement official, Zhao Kezhi, was quoted as saying in the statement.Chinese authorities had previously remained tight-lipped about the whereabouts of Meng, following his sudden disappearance last month after he flew from France to China. In an earlier statement released on Sunday, the Chinese government said Meng was "under investigation" by the National Supervisory Commission, the country's top anti-corruption unit, but gave no further details on whether he was in custody or what the charges might be.Concerns over Meng's whereabouts were first raised by wife, Grace, who reported him missing to French authorities in the city of Lyon, where the couple live, last Thursday. She was moved to contact authorities after she received a final text message on September 25, shortly after he arrived in China, with a knife emoji and instructions to "wait for my call."That call never came. The South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based newspaper known for its connections inside the Chinese government, said Meng was "taken away" for questioning upon landing in China last week. The newspaper cited an unnamed source. In a separate development, Interpol said it had received Meng's resignation from the international police agency with "immediate effect" according to statement posted Sunday. It made no mention of the former president's whereabouts or the Chinese investigation. 1861

The National Rifle Association will host its annual convention this weekend, and on the first day of the convention, firearms will be barred from entering the Dallas facility hosting the NRA. According to a bulletin from the United States Secret Service, firearms, along with knives, laser pointers and a variety of other items will be banned from the facility. This is because Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to appear on Friday. Civilians are generally prohibited from carrying weapons when the Vice President or President is present, and a meeting of the NRA is no exception. "Due to the attendance of the Vice President of the United States at the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum on Friday, May 4, the U.S. Secret Service will be responsible for event security around the Arena at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center," a statement on the NRA's website said. "As a result, firearms and firearm accessories, knives or weapons of any kind will be prohibited in the forum prior to and during his attendance"CNN is also reporting that President Donald Trump will attend on Friday The firearm ban only extends for Friday's sessions, and not for Saturday or Sunday. Some survivors of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, and backers of the March for Our Lives movement said it is hypocritical that a group that decries gun control regulations won't be allowed to have its members carry weapons. "The NRA has evolved into such a hilarious parody of itself," Stoneman Douglas High School student said on Twitter in response to the weapon ban announcement. Leaders of the March for Our Lives have made the NRA a target of theirs, decrying politicians who accept campaign contributions from the group. "Wait wait wait wait wait wait you’re telling me to make the VP safe there aren’t any weapons around but when it comes to children they want guns everywhere?" Matt Deisch, leader of the March for Our Lives campaign, and a former Stoneman Douglas high school student, said on Twitter. "Can someone explain this to me? Because it sounds like the NRA wants to protect people who help them sell guns, not kids."A petition calling for Pence to cancel his appearance at the NRA convention has drawn nearly 45,000 virtual signatures. A similar firearm ban was enacted at last year's NRA Leadership Forum due to Trump's attendance.  2405

The mother of mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc writes that she is estranged from her son but hurt by his alleged attacks, and she calls on the country -- specifically, President Donald Trump -- to tone down the nasty rhetoric. She further warned that the political vitriol -- particularly talk of "war" against the media and political parties — could resonate with the mentally ill, like her son, and inspire them to "violently act out in our country," Madeline Sayoc wrote in an open letter to television network ABC, which published the correspondence Sunday night.Madeline Sayoc also said that her 56-year-old son's relatives had tried, to no avail, to get him help, and that American families need better laws to allow families to "compel and require" treatment, when necessary. Here is the full text of the letter: 822

The job market keeps pumping out jobs. The unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent and the economy added 157,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department said Friday. But workers' average hourly paychecks grew tepidly from the previous month and are up just 2.7 percent compared to the same time last year. During previous expansions, wages have grown at a faster pace. Economists' maintain that wages will rise as economy drains remaining slack from the labor market and businesses' pay more to retain workers.Related: How the US economoy is doing now in four charts"With inflation running at a roughly 2 percent rate, that means that there's not a lot of financial wiggle room for many Americans," said Mark Hamrick, Bankrate.com's senior economic analyst. Economists will get another update on inflation next week when consumer and producer price indexes' are released.A quirk in the calendar may explain why average hourly wages inched up only 7 cents from June to July, explained Josh Wright, chief economist at software firm iCIMS: The Labor Department surveys employers at a different time than when companies pay their workers. On the bright side, the hiring spree has continued as the economy marches along. The economy grew at 4.1 percent during the second quarter, its fastest place in nearly four years.Related: US economy grows at fastest paces since 2014In a statement on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve described a healthy picture of the US economy."Job gains have been strong, on average, in recent months, and the unemployment rate has stayed low," the Fed said. "Household spending and business fixed investment have grown strongly."Although the July hiring number fell below economists' expectations, the government revised the previous months' job gains by an additional 59,000. With revisions, job gains have averaged 224,000 a month over the past three months. So far this year, job growth has averaged 215,000 per month, above last year's pace of 182,000, noted PNC chief economist Gus Faucher.Last month, the manufacturing sector added 37,000 jobs. Economists were watching manufacturing closely for signs of a drag from the Trump administration's escalation of trade tensions with China and allies."It appears to be that the strength of fiscal stimulus measures are outweighing any kind of effect of trade tensions," said Wright from iCIMS.The retail sector also added 7,000 jobs, despite 32,000 jobs lost in sporting goods, hobby, book, music and toy stores.Despite many businesses' trouble finding qualified workers, they are still hiring and looking outside traditional pools for talent. That's good news for workers without a high school degree and those without a college degree. The unemployment rate ticked down for both groups last month."This is not a labor market in which you're going to get your wish list candidate," Wright said. "The question is, 'Can you hire someone who's good enough?'"The-CNN-Wire 2934
