SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers at UC San Diego Health are now looking for volunteers to participate in a COVID-19 clinical trial, starting locally next week.Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine clinical trials will take place in 36 states across the country.“This is the second vaccine trial for the prevention of COVID-19, and like the first, it is a trial of 30,000 individuals nationally,” said Dr. Susan Little, a professor of Medicine and UCSD and the lead on this trial.Little said UCSD researchers hope to enroll about 1,600 people in eight weeks to participate in the trial.“Eighteen or older, in generally good health, but with underlying conditions that put them at greater risk for COVID-19,” she said. “Or people with increased risk of acquiring COVID-19 because of their professions or where they live.”Little said a bus would act as a mobile vaccine clinic. The bus will stop in parking lots in communities that have been historically underrepresented in medical research or disproportionately affected by COVID-19.“We’re going to focus on communities most impacted, the South Bay, East County, underserved communities and communities that have been hardest hit by COVID-19 those with the highest rate of infection in the community,” she said. “It’s a series of two vaccines, a month apart, people will be prescreened over the phone, and then they’ll be vaccinated on day one and day 29. Then they’ll be followed for two years thereafter.”In Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials, Little said the vaccine proved to be safe.“We know that it’s safe in the sense that it causes local tenderness, some mild fatigue headache. Side effects went away in about one week,” she said. “This will be placebo-controlled, so I won’t know, and the participants won’t know whether they got a vaccine or placebo.”She said for every one person who gets the placebo, two people will get the vaccine. If people develop COVID-19 symptoms during the trial, two other mobile wellness clinics will be available for treatment.“Anybody who develops symptoms that are worrisome to COVID, we will come see them in our wellness vehicles and test them for COVID. The most important thing is to assess the sort of severity of their symptoms and determine whether they’ve developed COVID while on the study,” she said.Little said the goal is that there might be enough data to see if this vaccine is effective in six to nine months.“We have two ways out of this pandemic, treatment, and vaccines,” she said. “Our hope is through vaccine efforts like this, we won’t just find one vaccine that works, but we might find several.”Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more by clicking here, or calling 619-742-0433. 2696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego health officials are worried about a recent uptick in out-of-towners testing positive for coronavirus locally ahead of the holiday weekend. In San Diego, health officials have seen increases in positive COVID-19 cases diagnosed locally in people who live in nearby counties or states. Throughout the pandemic, there have been 16 Arizona residents have tested positive while in the region, seven of those were in the last week. So far, 330 Imperial County residents have tested positive while in San Diego and 61 of those were in the last week, as cases grow in that county.RELATED: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food to slow COVID-19 spread"We have looked specifically at nearby county residents. Certainly, the number of individuals who live in Imperial County who are diagnosed in San Diego have increased in the last number of weeks," said Dr. Eric McDonald, director of the county’s epidemiology and immunization department. "The number of cases who have Arizona as their primary residence have also increased in the last number of days."With Monday's decision to close bars that don't serve food ahead of the July 4 weekend, the hope is the move will deter out-of-county residents from coming to San Diego."If you go back to some of the restrictions that were announced today, so that we are more consistent with our neighboring counties in terms of bar closures, it somewhat addresses that," McDonald said. "Certainly, if all the surrounding areas had more restrictions and we were perceived as a place where individuals could have more freedom to do certain types of social interactions, that could be a draw."RELATED: Gov. Newsom shuts down bars in Los Angeles, six other counties amid surge in COVID-19 casesSan Diego's beaches are scheduled to remain open as of Monday. Nearby Los Angeles County officials announced they will close their beaches for the weekend."We're going to reach out to the cities and assess their level of comfort in being able to enforce the physical distancing requirements at the beaches," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said. "We have, to date, not seen significant numbers of outbreaks or case trends from outdoor settings. So there is more concern about indoor than outdoor. But it is something we're certainly going to reach out to the cities to ascertain." 2347

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Resources are available throughout San Diego County for victims of domestic violence who believe their situation may turn life threatening.“There’s nothing more tragic than this happening. This is exactly what we never want to see happen again,” said Heather Finlay with the YWCA. Finlay says she was devastated after learning of the mother and her children killed over the weekend. YWCA offers an emergency shelter and transitional housing for parents and families dealing with domestic violence. RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“One in four women and one in seven men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes,” Finlay added. According to SANDAG, in 2018, more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in San Diego County. “Leaving an intimate partnership is never easy especially if there are children involved,” said Yvette Lopez-Cooper with the San Diego Family Justice Center. RELATED: Parents, 3 children killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicideThe center has a number of resources available, including if someone decides to file a restraining order. The order doesn’t become active until the abuser is served and made aware of the action. “Many times, these court orders do work and the violent behaviors stops. In cases where the court order is ignored and the violence escalates it’s important for that individual to develop a safety care plan,” she added. A safety care plan includes having a packed bag somewhere safe with clothes and copies of personal documents and planning an escape route.
