MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine was honored Thursday after disarming a gunman in the Chesterton neighborhood the week prior.Sgt. Jake McClung received the Navy Commendation Medal at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. According to the Navy and Marines Awards Manual, "It may be awarded to any service member who distinguishes themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement."San Diego Police got a call at 6:18 p.m. on June 4 of a man armed with a rifle, pointing it at families and hitting cars with the gun near Linda Vista Rd. and Wheatley St.McClung was driving through his neighborhood when he saw the man, identified as a Navy sailor in the police report, holding a rifle and threw a firecracker at his vehicle.Sgt. McClung said he parked in his driveway and watched the man walk into the street and point his rifle at cars. McClung said the man's wife and toddler came out to try and talk with him and were crying. McClung said the man pointed the rifle at his family and that's when McClung stepped between the gunman and the family to try and de-escalate the situation.He said the man was acting erratically and that gave the man's wife and child a chance to get inside. McClung said he teamed up with the neighborhood security guard and walked up to the man, trying to calm him.McClung said when he saw an opening he reached for the rifle and was able to disarm him, but he took a couple punches to the face, breaking his nose. McClung said he and the security guard wrestled the sailor to the ground and handcuffed him before police arrived."I don't know if he had PTSD of not, but if he was suicidal I also wanted to protect him, because he had a gun, he was in the middle of the street. The security guard later told me he was about to shoot him, so if that would have happened, it would have cost his life too. Even though he was obviously in the wrong, we have to take care of our own and sometimes taking care of our own means protecting them from themselves," McClung said.The man was arrested on several felony charges, including felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine. He has since bailed out, according to police.The struggle between McClung and the man happened steps away from a childcare facility and an elementary school that were set to open the next day. 2378

(KGTV) - A National City crematorium owner denied Friday that human remains were released into the air during a furnace emergency at the facility.National City firefighters responded to a call Thursday afternoon at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.A furnace door was open while the system was operating, triggering the building’s heat detectors. A plume of smoke rose from the building and drifted east.A National City Fire captain and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District indicated human remains were released into the air along with chemicals, the crematorium owner disputes the information.Angela told 10News reporter Travis Rice the human remains were covered with a cardboard box at the time of the emergency. The box caught fire due to ambient heat in the furnace and the remains were not burned, she said. NATIONAL CITY, Calif (KGTV) -- The National City Elementary Teachers Association reached a contract settlement with the National School District Tuesday.Under the settlement, teachers will receive a 2 percent on-schedule increase, retroactive to January 2018.The settlement also makes changes to health and welfare benefits. The district increased its maximum contribution by 0 to go toward medical, dental, vision care and life insurance premiums, bringing the total to ,000 for full time employees.RELATED: National City elementary school teachers vote to approve strike  “We had faith in our productive relationship with the National City Elementary Teachers Association and are pleased to come to this agreement together,” said Superintendent Leighangela Brady. “By using 2018-2019 Local Control and Accountability Plan funding, we are providing a 2 percent on-schedule raise to attract and retain teachers for our exceptional District.”The tentative agreement will now go to members of the association for approval. Mykehia Curry is going to be the first member of her family to go to college, but she needed a little help to get there.The Macon, Georgia, teen took out student loans to pay for her tuition and housing at Albany State University, but she didn't have money for some of the things she'd need for her first time living away from home.Curry's mom is on disability, so money has been tight.On Saturday, just days before she was scheduled to leave for school, she asked God for help."I wrote a note that said 'God please help me get the rest of my stuff for college,'" Curry told CNN. "Then I said 'Amen, I love you God' and I wrote my name and number."She tied the note to three helium balloons leftover from her grandmother's birthday celebration and let them go."When I was writing the note, I was just trying to reach out to God. I didn't know where it would land," she said. "I thought that someone would pick it up and call me and tell me they got it or just throw it in the trash."The balloons flew about 15 miles northeast and carried the note to Gray, Georgia.That's where Jerome Jones, a Baptist minister, found it. Jones also works for Georgia Power and spotted the balloons on Monday while he was out on a job."I saw something shiny and floating, so I walked over there and I got it and it was balloons with a note tied to it," Jones told CNN affiliate WMGT. "They floated all night and they landed right in my hands, I mean, practically."He called Curry and offered to buy what she needed."He said they would love to help me out," Curry said. "I was so shocked and surprised."Jones and another member of his church brought her a comforter and refrigerator on Tuesday and now she's on her way to Albany State to get moved into her dorm.She said she plans to keep in touch with Jones and let him know how she's doing at school.Curry will be studying nursing and hopes to get a job on campus in a couple of months after she gets settled in with her classes."I am very excited to meet new people and start my journey and a new chapter in my life," she said. National walkout protests are planned at schools across the country on Wednesday in support of students affected by the Parkland, Florida school shooting.Students, teachers, parents and others associated with schools are participating to push for legislation that aims to protect public places from gun violence.The walkout is organized by Women's March Youth EMPOWER, and the group is calling for those who support the effort to walk out of schools for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. in each time zone.
