DENTON, Texas – Get ready for some major closet envy. An impressive collection of clothing, shoes and accessories archives hundreds of years of fashion history. Some even go back 1,000 years. Step inside the 13,000 square foot space and you’ll find endless racks of clothing and accessories packed from floor to ceiling. “These are important parts of fashionista history that need to be preserved,” said Annette Becker, the director of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas. The entire collection has been built through donations. “We have pieces that are examples of French couture from the most elite parts of the fashion design world to things that were made on someone's kitchen table by their grandmother,” said Becker. Started in 1938, UNT took custody of the collection in 1972. Since then it has grown to nearly 20,000 garments and accessories including 1,400 pairs of shoes, 2,500 hats and 750 handbags. Becker proudly shows off some of the collection’s most prized possessions. “This is a dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in the final scene of the film Charade and it was donated to us by Hubert de Givenchy who designed most of Audrey Hepburn's clothing for film,” she said. “We have a wide variety of examples from throughout fashion history in our collection and the oldest piece we have is a pre-Colombian textile fragment that's around 1,000 years old. We have to keep this really carefully stored in this acid free cardboard,” she explains. The piece was woven before synthetic dyes were even created. “So that red color really meant power and status,” said Becker. Today, the archive that spans primarily over 250 years is a valuable historical resource for researchers and students. But right now, it’s only available to visiting designers and research students. The ultimate goal is to document everything in the collection and make it accessible to anyone around the world. “Whether that's 8-year-olds who are thinking about a future career in fashion design to fashion curator curators from Paris who have come to our collection to do research,” said Becker. That means having every single item photographed and digitized so that anyone can see the collection online. Megan DeSoto, an Adjunct Photography Instructor at UNT, is spearheading the effort. “We're taking a lot of time to make these really high-resolution well-made photographs so that they're only handled once photographed once and then taken back to where they're being preserved,” said DeSoto. It’s a unique repository that Becker says will preserve centuries of fashion for generations to come.“Often in the world of fashion we think about these really elite designers and people walking the runways in Paris but really clothing is an art form that's in our everyday lives.” 2800
CHICAGO, Ill. – Imagine a window providing a glimpse into the past – Europe in the late 13th century, 1930s America, life during the Revolutionary War. Then imagine that world fitting inside the palm of your hand. That’s what happens inside Jay Kupjack’s workshop. He is literally a giant, towering over his diminutive room recreations. “I guess you could call me a miniaturist, I suppose,” said Kupjack. Krupjack specializes in all things small. “The preferred scale everybody likes is 1/12th,” he explained. “So, it's an inch to a foot. That seems to work out. Not too small. Not too big.” Kupjack is the last of a dynasty of miniature artists. “It's some you know it's deliberate and it's delicate,” said Kupjack. Both his father, Eugene, and brother, Hank, dedicated their lives to the intricate Lilliputian artform. Everything is made by hand. “My brother liked doing ancient stuff,” said Kupjack. “He did Greek Roman, Egyptian. We don't go too far into the present. There's a 1940s diner.” Kupjack’s late father was the primary artist on many of the 68 Thorne rooms that have been on display at the Art Institute of Chicago since the 1930s. “This probably took about a year,” Kupjack said about an interior of a pirate’s cabin. Michigan's new cyberbullying law will go into effect on March 27. Public Act 457 of 2018, sponsored by Rep. Pete Lucido (R-Shelby Township), formally defines cyberbullying as a misdemeanor. It states that cyberbullying is a crime punishable by 93 days in jail or a fine of up to 0. In addition, a person who engages in a continued pattern of harassing or intimidating behavior and causes serious injury to the victim is guilty of a felony punishable by up to five years and a ,000 fine. A "pattern of repeated harassment" is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a ,000 fine. The pattern means a a series of two or more separate noncontinuous acts of harassing or intimidating behavior. A tidal wave of information hits us daily from the moment we open our phone and computer, and when it comes to social media, spotting "fake" from "fact" before you share news and photos takes some work! "More people are getting their information through social media,” says Katy Byron, program director of MediaWise with the Poynter Institute. Byron points to a Stanford University study, explaining just how widespread the issue of deciphering fiction from non-fiction is among teens. "More than 80 percent of teenagers don't know the difference between a real news story and a native advertisement online," says Byron. This is why Poynter’s MediaWise program was created. "We want to reach 1 million teens by 2020," says Byron. The program uses teen fact checkers that post social media videos to help others to determine what is real and what’s not. The crusade of teens across the country are also helping others determine how to debunk misinformation. “I think this is something anyone can do right now,” Byron says. Byron says before sharing pictures and articles online, ask yourself these three questions: 1. Who's behind the information? 2. What is the evidence? 3. What do other sources say? "I hope that we reach as many kids as we can with the curriculum and what we are teaching on our social media channels, so that they'll take these skills with them throughout their lives," Byron says. 1417
BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said.It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171
