SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man Wednesday suspected of robbing a US Bank in North park before causing a major backup on I-5 in the South Bay. According to the FBI, Gustavo Torres, 32, was charged Thursday with one count of robbery. Torres is accused of robbing the US Bank on the 3200 block of University Avenue in North Park on August 7. Shortly after the robbery, San Diego Police were able to track down a suspect matching the bank robber’s description on Interstate 5 near Main Street in Chula Vista. Authorities shut down all lanes of southbound I-5 during the arrest, forcing traffic to a halt. According to the FBI, Torres is due in court for an arraignment on August 9. 696

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than a million California voters have signed up for a new statewide tool that can track a mail-in ballot through its journey from the post office to the mailbox to the final election tally, said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.“Where’s My Ballot?” can send voters texts, emails or recorded voice calls updating them on their ballot’s status, including when the ballot has been mailed to a voter, when the elections office has received it, and when the ballot has been counted. Voters must sign up for the service.The system can also alert the voter if election officials have rejected their ballot due to a discrepancy, like if the ballot has been flagged for a missing or mismatched signature.“Vote-by-mail has been popular in California for many, many years. But with a further increase in vote-by-mail participation, the transparency and accountability of those mail-in ballots is even more paramount,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in an interview.Because of the pandemic, election officials are sending mail ballots to every active, registered voter in California for the first time in state history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are searching for a group of males targeting local Apple stores in the North County.Police said two Apple locations, one in Carlsbad and the other in Escondido, have been targeted in a series of grab and runs. During the incidents, police say the males generally enter in hoodies or jackets and grab multiple Apple devices on display tables before quickly exiting.Outside, a getaway vehicle is usually waiting, police added.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe thefts occurred at the Carlsbad location, 1923 Calle Barcelona in the Forum Carlsbad, on May 16, June 18, July 11, and July 13, and the Escondido store, at 272 E. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the San Diego Zoo's oldest residents was euthanized due to age-related illnesses Wednesday.The zoo's male African lion, M'bari, had been suffering from a degenerative kidney, large kidney cyst, and spinal arthritis and under veterinary care before the decision was made to put him down, according to park spokesperson Andrew Jones.At 15-years-old, M'bari had exceeded expectations of a lion's average lifespan, which is about 10 years in the wild and can exceed 25 years in captivity, according to the zoo."In recent days, his condition had steadily worsened, despite attempts by animal care staff to modify his habitat to make him more comfortable," a statement from the zoo read. "This morning, because of his worsening quality of life, animal care staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him."M'bari was introduced to locals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 2004 with the opening of Lion Camp when he was about two years old. He eventually moved to the San Diego Zoo in 2009, and has most recently lived with his mate, Etosha, in the Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey habitat.
