Is getting a new job on the top of your holiday wish list this year? Well, experts say, December is actually one of the best times to look for a job."We’re hearing from many hiring managers that they will still be working to fill their positions over the next couple of weeks," said Robert Half senior regional president Karen Policastro.Policastro says now is as good a time as any to put yourself out there, especially in this highly-competitive job market."Make sure you are extremely active over the holidays because many hiring and decision makers want to be able to have their staff filled and complete and hit the ground running come January," said Policastro. And now, nine months into the pandemic, the job fields that are hiring are a little different."We’ve seen an influx in accounts payable clerks, collections clerks, HR positions. Surprisingly, we have a lot of human resource positions come through," said Policastro. She says with so many people working from home, help desk positions and customer service positions are also in high demand."Companies have had to shift and be extremely flexible due to the pandemic. And these positions have definitely become more in demand," said Policastro. And if you’re one of the millions of service industry workers who have lost their jobs or have had your hours cut, these could potentially be great jobs."If you’ve been in the restaurant industry, you definitely have customer service skills. So, cater your resume and/or online profile, cover letter, to really highlight the customer experience that you were able to provide," said Policastro.Policastro also says a lot of companies are looking to hire temporary or contract positions, especially while they're remote. So, think about those options as well. A lot of places are posting job openings on sites like LinkedIn. Make sure your profile is up to date and says, "Available Immediately". 1909

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — This year has been especially hard on local musicians, who typically rely on gigs in restaurants and clubs to make ends meet. But for the past nine months the pandemic has kept that from happening.Everybody is taking a financial hit this year whether it's a music venue, music artist, even people on the audio/video side of things," said Jake Huber. Before the pandemic, local film maker Jake Huber and live venue owner Mike Angel launched the web TV series called 'Music in Transit' a way to highlight the Circle City's musicians as they perform live shows on IndyGo buses and bus stops."It's really that simple. We put bands on a bus and when it allows for it an audience too," said Angel.Season one was all about surprising new audiences. "You stop in your own tracks and you're like oh, what is this I'm experiencing right now? After a while every single act we had formed a crowd, and through that many acts have reached out to us saying thank you because I've gained a new audience. I've had people buy our record, just from these videos," Huber said.Season Two of Music in Transit will look a bit different. The mobile shows are socially distanced this time around, with a limited crowd. Huber and Angel are hoping season two will allow the world to still see Indianapolis musicians of multiple genre's, who, thanks to pandemic restrictions, could use all the exposure they can get."Hip hop, old country, indie rock, funk. Everything really. If we promote this properly, we could get a pretty broad reach for them and hopefully drive up their album sales a little bit," said Angel.Season two of Music in Transit will premier this month on YouTube -- that's also where you can catch up on the first season. This story was first reported by Cameron Ridle at WRTV in Indianapolis, Indiana. 1820

In what proved to be the most deadly week of the pandemic so far, the U.S. averaged more than 2,000 reported deaths a day from COVID-19 between Nov. 29 and Dec. 6.According to the COVID Tracking Project, the U.S. saw an average of 2,171 reported deaths every single day for the last week. Three of those days — Dec. 2 through Dec. 4 — the U.S. reported more than 2,500 deaths per day.The 7-day rolling average of 2,171 reported deaths a day is now the highest it has ever been since the start of the pandemic, even dating back to April when Americans were dying as a result of the uncontrolled spread of the virus. And while last week was bleak, all indications are that deaths will continue to rise in the weeks to come. The rate of infection in the U.S. exploded last week, jumping from an already-high 158,000 new cases a day to about 192,000 a day. That number is expected to continue climbing in the days ahead, as test results from those who contracted the virus at Thanksgiving gatherings continue to be processed. The increased spread of infections comes at a concerning time, as a record 101,000 Americans are already in the hospital with COVID-19. Because virus hospitalizations typically lag behind confirmed infections, health experts worry that many more Americans will need to be hospitalized at a time when bed space is dwindling. For instance, hospitals in Southern California currently have only about 15% of ICU bed space available. Passing that threshold triggered a new wave of restrictions in the region this weekend, like the closing of some non-essential businesses and advisories against in-person gatherings. As of Monday morning, according to a Johns Hopkins database, the U.S. had seen 14.8 million COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic and 282,000 deaths. 1809

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Tyson Foods says it has fired seven top managers at its largest pork plant after an independent investigation into allegations that they bet on how many workers would test positive for the coronavirus. The company announced Wednesday that the investigation led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder revealed troubling behavior that resulted in the firings at the plant in Waterloo, Iowa. “We value our people and expect everyone on the team, especially our leaders, to operate with integrity and care in everything we do,” said Tyson Foods President & CEO Dean Banks said in a press release. “The behaviors exhibited by these individuals do not represent the Tyson core values, which is why we took immediate and appropriate action to get to the truth. Now that the investigation has concluded, we are taking action based on the findings.”Banks traveled to the Waterloo plant on Wednesday to discuss the actions with employees. The names of the employees fired will not be released, the Associated Press reported.According to USA Today, lawyers who are representing the five Tyson workers who died of COVID-19 allege that plant manager Tom Hart organized a "cash buy-in, winner-take-all betting pool" among other managers and supervisors. 1278
