BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China values its traditional friendship with Zimbabwe and hopes to push forward relations between the two countries as well as the two armed forces, said Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie here on Sunday.Liang made the remarks in a meeting with Zimbabwean Commander of Defence Forces Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.Liang hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. He reaffirmed that his country would continue to stick to the one-China policy and was willing to further enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces.He also said Zimbabwe attached great importance to cooperation with China, and hoped to strengthen friendly cooperation with China within the framework of China-Africa Cooperation Forum.Earlier Sunday, Chiwenga also met with Chief of the General Staff of the PLA Chen Bingde.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) asked authorities in the nation's major wheat-planting areas to work to achieve quick summer grain harvests in spite of the difficulties posed by the extreme weather.This year's summer harvest has proven more difficult than usual because the ripening of winter wheat has taken place one week later than normal because of the bitterly cold weather last winter, while the consistently heavy rains that recently struck south China have impeded the harvest efforts, the MOA said.The ministry said local authorities should prioritize the harvest work and complete the harvest as quickly as possible.Reaping machine should be distributed properly in different locations to raise the harvesting efficiency, it added. Also, local departments should update information such as weather, market demands, prices and transportation to ensure a smooth harvest, the ministry noted.China's four major grain production areas have shown cautious optimism toward their 2010 summer grain output. Henan, Shandong and Anhui provinces expect output of wheat to be equal or slightly higher than last year, while Hebei province forecasts slightly reduced output, according to information coming from a high level agriculture meeting held earlier in May in Zhengzhou city, the capital of Henan province.According to the MOA data, China's summer grain output accounts for one quarter of its annual food yield.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - China's economy is unlikely to see a "double dip" in the second half of this year, and the economic growth for the remaining six months is expected to surpass 9 percent, according to a Bank of Communications report released Saturday.China's economic growth will slow down in the next half year, while consumer prices would fall from its peak, said the nation's fifth largest commercial bank in a report on the outlook of China's economy for the second half of 2010"For China, it is never a recession unless the economic growth drops below 7 percent," said Lian Ping, chief economist with the Shanghai-based bank.The growth is sustainable and healthy for the economy as the growth rate stays around 9 percent, he said.China's exports, a major force driving the economic growth, would continue to rebound in the second half, and the growth for the entire year would stay above 20 percent, according to the report.For the latter half of 2010 consumption is to grow by 18.5 percent from a year ago while investment growth will drop steadily to about 21 percent due to government support to the private sector and strategic emerging industries, it said.Increasing labor costs, resources and food prices is expected to push up China's consumer prices, but the growth would be restrained in the second half due to the slowing money supply and eased imported inflationary pressures, it said.China's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 11.1 percent in the first six months of this year from one year earlier, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.China's consumer price index stood at 2.6 percent in the first half of 2010, according to the NBS, while retail sales and fixed asset investments grew 18.2 percent and 25 percent year on year, respectively.China would maintain a stable monetary policy for the rest of the year since the global economic condition is still complicated, and an interest rate hike is unlikely to be seen, said the report.The bank estimated that new loans for the entire year would stand between 7 to 8 trillion yuan (1.03 trillion to 1.18 trillion U.S. dollars).The bank also forecasted in the report that the Chinese government would remain tough with the property sector, but there is little possibility for additional curbs on the market. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, with 505 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.The county education department said Saturday that primary and middle schools in Zhouqu will start the autumn semester on Aug. 25, ten days later than scheduled.This was because hundreds of homes and one primary school were buried and more schools were damaged or inundated in water.
