WASHINGTON, D.C. – Election Day is less than 50 days away, but results from the election could take a lot longer.That's because a record number of voters are voting by mail this election and different states have different rules regarding when those ballots can be opened and processed. Absentee ballots or mail-in ballots generally take a lot longer to count compared to in-person voting machines, because ballots need to be opened and scanned. For instance, in the crucial swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, ballots can't be opened until Election Day. That differs from other states, like Colorado, which can open ballots as they come into election offices. That means it will take election officials in those swing states a herculean effort to process and scan ballots to get accurate results by the end of election night. Each state is facing either pending legislation at their State Capitol or various lawsuits asking the rules be changed. Those aren't the only reasons results may be delayed. In many states, like North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and Minnesota, ballots are allowed to be postmarked on Election Day. That means it may take a few days to arrive to an election office. "I think we are looking at five to seven days to roughly a week," said Ted Trimpa, a political consultant. "The challenge is you are going to have so many states doing mail-in ballots that have never done mail ballots," Trimpa said. And it may not just be swing states that are the issue.In New York, a state that will almost certainty vote Democrat, primary results from earlier this year took four weeks in some cases. Henry Rosoff, a political reporter with WPIX in New York City, explained New York law requires 48 hours to pass after the election before absentee ballots can be counted. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump and the first lady were greeted with boos Thursday as they visited the Supreme Court to pay their respects to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.As Trump stood next to the justice's casket, a crowd chanted “vote him out” and “honor her wish,” referring to Ginsburg’s request that the next president should fill her open seat.Just days before her death, Ginsburg’s granddaughter, Clara Spera, says the justice dictated this statement to her, “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”Ginsburg died last week at the age of 87. She is currently lying in repose at the Supreme Court for a second day.The president will announce his candidate to replace Ginsburg on Saturday. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Protesters on both sides of the political spectrum have gathered in the nation’s capital as the U.S. prepares for Election Day results.Specifically, the area surrounding the White House has become a hot spot for demonstrators in support of President Donald Trump, as well as those in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden.A demonstrator shattered a ceramic MAGA hat on the ground right in front of the White House. They said that’s when they’re more nervous about what could happen in the district.One D.C. resident said the boarding-up of his community is a bit sad.“I mean that’s where we are, I guess. It’s actually been a little bit emotional for me to see you know seeing that happening,” said D.C. resident Alex Parcan. “I mean I’m from here. I’m not used to seeing on a night that should be, whatever your political persuasion is, a night that should be about us celebrating our democracy. That we’re in this place where we are having to board up buildings and things, like that’s sad.”Meanwhile, other protesters are in support of the fencing and added security, but they wish it wasn’t necessary.“It’s actually very sad and also very sad that when there’s a Republican running for office, the other side makes threats and says it will burn it down, well the Trump supporters in the streets will make them know they’re not welcome,” said James Sullivan, a Trump supporter. “I think it’s a logical response to threats and the president and the Trump administration, the police of D.C., they have to treat every threats seriously.”Law enforcement is also camped out around Washington, just in case any of the protests regarding the election turn violent or need broken up.Regardless of the electoral results, protests are expected to continue for days to come.So far, they’ve been peaceful, and it seems a majority of people out on the streets want to keep it that way.“All I want is a peaceful transition,” said one protester. “I mean it’s been done this way since we’ve had a president. It’s always been peaceful and that’s really all we want.”That protester thinks it’s important to set an example for the world.“We are Americans. The world watches us. We set the example. WAUWATOSA, Wis. — A 3-year-old in Wisconsin can see for the first time thanks to a new procedure.  McKinley Sovey is the youngest person to undergo this type of gene therapy. Her parents Parker and Julie Sovey have been watching her progress."There was that moment when she did look at me for the first time," said Julie. "I was like I think this is working. I can't even really explain it.  She's 3 years old and she looks at mom for the first time. It was a really really cool moment and it was the moment I was waiting for."McKinley was born practically blind. The most she could see was the contrast of light. When she was a year and a half, doctors discovered she inherited a retinal disease.  "Six months after that FDA approval, and then less than a year after that she's having the procedure, so it's been like rapid fire," Parker said. Dr. Stephen Russell works in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Hospital. He performed both of McKinley's eye surgeries with the gene therapy earlier this month.  "Complicated drug because it has multiple parts to the drug and complicated surgery because to make sure we delivered the drug to the appropriate tissues," said Russell.Russell said he is basically forcing DNA into the right cell."We had to do a surgery just to put the solution in the appropriate spot, which is in the area underneath the retina," he said. "At that point, it's just fingers crossed that this gene ends up in the spot that it's supposed to," said Julie.The Soveys knew there were risks and potential complications.  "It's terrifying," said Russell.They were hoping the therapy would at least help McKinley maintain the little vision she had. After the first eye surgery, mom and dad didn't notice a difference. But it was shortly after the second surgery they knew it worked. Parker said she was moving with a purpose."She walked into the kitchen, pulled a chair out, stood up on the chair and actively feeling like the toaster and the coffee maker like she knew those were there and she wanted to get up and be able to feel them," he said.McKinley's depth perception is also changing."Being able to see things further away has been really neat and it's also been kind of scary because I feel like I'm having to re-childproof the house for a 3-year-old," said Julie."She use to feel around for whatever it was she was eating," Parker said. "Then she'd put her hands in it to see what it was and then she'd put the spoon in it, and then usually it was dumped by the time it got to her face."McKinley will still likely be visually impaired, but her parents said any progress is a bonus."She may no longer need to be a braille reader," Julie said. "I don't know if she'll need to use a cane to navigate."They said their daughter is becoming more confident and her personality is even changing."This is kind of part of medical history," said Julie.McKinley has some checkups scheduled, but doctors hope she won't need another surgery. 3071
