BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. The turnover at the Shanghai Stock Exchange was 154 billion yuan, showing investors' heartened confidence in economic recovery.Thursday's official figures revealed that the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector stood at 55.1 percent in March, up 3.1 percentage points from February, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left here Monday morning for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit on April 12-13 in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. President Barack Obama.Hu will deliver a speech stressing the importance of nuclear security and clarifying China's policy on the issue. BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhua) -- China is disappointed the European Union (EU) has decided to launch an anti-subsidy investigation into imported Chinese coated paper, Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Yao Jian said Saturday."China will closely follow this issue and reserves its right to take necessary measures in accordance with WTO rules," Yao said.He said the coated paper probe is the EU's first anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese products.The EU launched an anti-dumping investigation on Chinese coated paper two months ago, he said.Increased trade protectionism is a major threat to the world economy recovery, Yao said."To create a win-win situation, China and the EU should settle trade disputes cooperatively," he added.MOC data shows the EU initiated seven anti-dumping investigations against China in 2009.The EU is China's largest trade partner, with bilateral trade volume exceeding 360 billion U.S. dollars last year.

GUANGZHOU, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A total of 311 children have been rescued in a crackdown on child smuggling in south China's Guangdong Province over the past year, police authorities said Monday.Police arrested 645 people in 276 child smuggling cases from April last year to May 25 this year, said Zhai Kaixia, deputy director of the criminal investigation department under the provincial public security department.The nationwide DNA database designed to tracing missing children and cash rewards for information were instrumental in the crackdown, Zhai said.Zhai said the DNA database had helped reunite a boy in Shantou City with his parents in Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province, 11 years after he was sold to a man surnamed Chen for 13,800 yuan (2,020 U.S. dollars).The reward for tip-offs leading to the arrest of a suspect is 5,000 yuan and 10,000 yuan for information leading to the rescue of a child. The reward for a tip-off was capped at 50,000 yuan, he said.
