SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. I have never heard about this."Amazon says their employees don't go door-to-door. Anyone interested in Amazon Key has to contact the company by phone or through their website. 1354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A measure to implement ranked choice voting in the City of San Diego will be considered for the November ballot.The city's Rules Committee voted 3-2 on Wednesday to send the proposal to a full council vote, where councilmembers will decide if the measure is placed on the 2020 ballot this fall. The vote is expected to take place in July.Ranked choice voting would allow voters to list up to four candidates in order of preference, instead of casting one vote for a single candidate.RELATED: San Diego to consider major change to 'ranked choice' votingHere's how it would work:The top four candidates in each primary race would advance to the general election, instead of just the top two.In November, voters would then rank the candidates by preference.If one candidate has more than 50% of the vote on first count, that candidate would win. If no candidate reaches 50%, the last place finisher would be thrown out. That person's votes would then be reallocated according to the voters' second choice. The field would continue winnowing until a candidate tops 50%.The city would be required to also hold a voter awareness campaign to familiarize voters with the change.Councilmember Mark Kersey, who has led the effort to get the measure on the ballot, said in a release, "ranked Choice Voting increases choice for voters, competition and decreases negativity which is great for campaigns. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local retiree has a warning for Americans headed across the border after says he was shaken down for money during a recent trip to Tijuana, possibly due to COVID-19 restrictions.A few weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon, Tom and his wife, a Mexican native, decided to visit one of her relatives. It's a trip they've made countless times. They drove across the border into Tijuana in their modified truck, bearing California license plates. Almost immediately, he noticed they had company."Saw a small car with municipal officers get behind me and pulled me over," said Tom, who asked us not to use his real name.He says one of two uniformed officers asked him to get out of the truck and walk over the police car, where the officer checked his driver's license."He explained he was pulling me over for tinted windows," said Tom.Tom says he was asked if he was smuggling drugs. Tom said he wasn't."Then he said, 'Here's the real reason I'm pulling you over. The United States closed the border. People are starving, and I want your money. Don't freak out. Don't say anything, or we'll impound your truck and take you to the courts' ... That was scary. I felt helpless," said Tom.Tom says he handed over the in bills he had in his wallet. He says his wife gave the other officer her ."He gave her back and said, 'I don't want to leave you with nothing,'" said Tom.That officer also left her with more details."My wife said he explained to her that they are just mad at the United States, and they're just going to pull over Americans and take whatever money they have because the people in Tijuana are hurting really bad because the border is closed," said Tom.A ban on non-essential border travel by both governments has been in place since March to limit coronavirus infections. Though cross-border traffic still remains busy, the restrictions have taken an economic toll on both sides of the border."I don't understand why they're blaming Americans. We're struggling too," said Tom.Tom says his police encounter ended when the officers let him go, warning him to stay out of Tijuana to avoid a repeat experience. He plans to take that advice."Myself, I'm not going back down there. It just invites trouble. You don't know who you can trust down there. Americans should be cautious," said Tom.Tom says he didn't report it to Mexican authorities because he feared retaliation. He tells ABC 10News a week after his incident, his brother-in-law experienced a similar shakedown while walking in the same area.ABC 10News reached out to the Mexican consulate in San Diego to find out if there have been any similar reported incidents and are waiting to hear back.In a statement, a spokesperson with the Tijuana government said a formal investigation would be launched "to investigate ... this reprehensible case and to apply the corresponding sanctions ... We cannot let the evil act of an officer demerit the good work that has been done to generate greater confidence in the security authorities." 3030
