Then, as he understood the context, his frustration disintegrated, concerned more with the fact Heitmann never got help. "I feel for the family in that case. She's been manning a phone bank nearly every day for the past few weeks. "It's important for us to get out the vote so we can grab the attention of our decision-makers and get things done," Fields said.Fields is the Government and Public Relations Director for the Asian Pacific Islander Initiative. The group does many things to support and advance its community, including civic engagement."We are the second largest ethnic group after Latinos we are the largest segment among Asian Pacific Islanders," says Fields.According to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, more than 46,000 special language ballots have been requested in Filipino this year.Fields says there are several factors she thinks will encourage people to vote in record numbers, including having a Filipino candidate on the ballot, such as Todd Gloria, who is running for San Diego mayor."This is the first time someone from our community would be the leader of a city with 1 million-plus residents so that's really exciting," Fields said.The effort to get out the vote has been impacted by COVID-19, but the outreach is all done virtually this year."Phone banking is one way, text banking is another, virtual town hall like we will have Friday," Fields recalls.That town hall is designed to answer questions about how and when to vote. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The explosions that shook a La Jolla neighborhood late last week revealed the surface of a much deeper, bitter fight. The detonations happened behind the home of the late Alex Jvirblis, who died in August at the age of 82. Neighbors describe him as a quiet but pleasant individual, and recalled few interactions. RELATED: Explosions ring out during hazmat scare at La Jolla homeOn Thursday and Friday of last week, the bomb squad exploded illegally stored chemicals from behind Jvirblis' house on Wrelton Road in Bird Rock. Jvirblis had no spouse or children. What he did have, however, was a business called Curtis Technology. It's tucked away in an industrial part of Sorrento Valley. Curtis Technology offers metal forming, cutting and finishing operations, which requires the use of chemicals. A woman named Daksha Dave is listed as its business contact online, and as treasurer with the Environmental Protection Agency. His will gives the state to the full authority to sell, lease, or hold all of his assets. That's where the fight starts. Hockenbrought is also the one who alerted authorities to the illegally stored chemicals, according to federal search warrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle between rideshare companies and drivers' unions is on the ballot in the form of Proposition 22. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors.The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash.It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance.They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. "I've been driving all this year. "It is definitely helping the billionaires and the people who are running these companies but it is not helping the drivers."The Yes on 22 campaign says if the proposition doesn't pass rides will be harder to find and prices will go up.
