DENVER — Social distancing orders have taken effect across the country because of COVID-19. But there are still those who choose to ignore the orders, and experts warn it could be a formula for disaster. The world has separated into two groups — the rule-followers who are social distancing in the hopes of "flattening the curve" — and the risk-takers storming the world's beaches and parks in spite of COVID-19. It's an attitude upon which America was built — the freedom of choice. However, experts report that it could be the very reason why the United States could be in a worse position than other countries when it comes to recovering from COVID-19.Which begs the question — why are some people ignoring the social distancing orders?"Our happiness is definitely related to social connection," said Tali Sharot, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of College London. "It's restricted in this situation. It's also related to our sense of control. It's also an example of optimism bias, where we believe our likelihood of encountering these events is much lower than other people.""Humans have a contact need," Dr. Wayne Pernell said. "So, when it comes to people ignoring the social distancing order for that contact need, there's this sense of 'well I'm clean.' No one wants to feel like they're a carrier, and no one wants to feel like they're dirty."Some medical experts said that ignoring guidance from health experts can be disastrous. "I think the reason why people ignore the social distancing is because there are mixed messages about the severity from the White House," said Amy Fairchild, a public health ethicist and the dean of Ohio State University's College of Public Health. "I would say we are on a worse trajectory than China was on because China had better access to test early on. The capacity to enforce social distancing is better in China. There are an authoritarian nation and they are willing to use the police, law enforcement and the military in ways that we are not willing to use in this country. We have to rely far more on persuasion."In order to stay safe, medical experts suggest finding ways to connect with people while being physically apart."A lot of people say we shouldn't call it social distancing – we should call it physical distancing," Sharot said."Even just a month ago, we were saying put the tech down, reach out to somebody and connect with them in person," Pernell said. "Now we're saying keep away from people and pick up the tech – that's a huge shift in our thinking, and that's an option." 2577

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. – The largest U.S. sporting goods retailer will stop selling guns at over 440 additional stores this year. The move by Dick's Sporting Goods follows a series of decisions to scale back gun sales. After the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Dick's announced it would stop selling semi-automatic weapons.A few months later, Dick's pulled firearms and hunting accessories from 10 stores as a test and overall sales increased at those stores. And in March 2019, the company pulled guns and ammunition from 125 additional stores. Now, Dick's plans to nearly quadruple the number of its stores without guns.Walmart continues to be the world's largest gun retailer. 695

Doctors treating a Taiwanese woman for a swollen eye were shocked to find four tiny bees living under her left eyelid. The miniscule insects, known as sweat bees, are 3 to 4 millimeters (0.12-0.16 inches) in length. Doctors at Taiwan's Fooyin University Hospital discovered the bees."I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging things inside," said Hung Chi-ting, the head of the ophthalmology department.Sweat bees, also known as halictidae, "nest near graves and in fallen trees, so it's easy to come across them while hiking in mountains," Hung explained.According to CTS, the woman, identified by her family name of He, said she thinks the insects blew into her eye at a relative's grave site when she visited it with her family. She washed her eyes with water but kept experiencing severe pain."It was very painful. Tears wouldn't stop coming out of my eye," she said. "I was scared to death."After three hours of agony, He visited the hospital, where doctors determined she was suffering from cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and severe corneal erosion caused by the sweat bees."Thankfully she came to the hospital early, otherwise I might have had to take her eyeball out to save her life," Hung said. He's eyesight had been reduced to under 0.1, the equivalent of 20-200 vision on the Snellen eye chart measuring visual acuity, Hung told reporters. "Luckily, she didn't have a high fever and it hadn't affected her central nervous system."Local media reported that He was expected to make a full recovery. The sweat bee feeds off nectar and pollen, but is also drawn to human perspiration, which provides "precious moisture and salts," according to the 1762

DENVER — The Food & Drug Administration warns that popular supplements used as an alternative to opioids could contain large amounts of heavy metals.Kratom (pronounced CRATE-um), is a supplement made from leaves of trees native to southeast Asia that have been traditionally been used as way to relieve pain, increase energy and ease opioid withdrawal. The leaves are traditionally brewed as a tea or chewed raw.But in recent years — especially in light of the opioid epidemic — kratom has become a popular alternative to treat pain. In the United States, kratom is often sold in pill form at smoke shops, holistic medicine shops and even gas stations. However, according to a health department 710
