SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. Results for potential cases of COVID-19 will now be available within 24 to 48 hours, health officials say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego City Council leaders Tuesday voted to approve a plan to fund three temporary housing shelters for the city's homeless.Council leaders voted 8-1 to approve the plan. Councilman David Alvarez was the only "no" vote.The largest shelter at 16th and Newton is scheduled to open by Dec. 1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's recovering job market will take a hit from the new wave of coronavirus-related restrictions that went into effect this week, SANDAG's chief economist said Thursday. The region's jobless rate had been falling from a peak of 25% in early May to 14.3% in late June, the San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday. However, on July 6, new restrictions went into effect to slow the spread of COVID 19. Restaurants and several other public-facing businesses were forced to end indoor service, while bars that don't serve food were required to close. That sent people who had returned to work back to seeking unemployment."Until there's a vaccine in place, it's going to be a very bumpy ride," said Ray Major, SANDAG's chief economist. "It's going to be up and down. There will be times probably where they say OK we can start opening up again, and then for some reason the health numbers start to become worse, and so the economy is going to be impacted again."At Little Italy's Cloak and Petal restaurant, managing partner Cesar Vallin said only about half of the restaurant's 40 workers have been brought back. He said the restaurant changed its menu and moved service outside, but the lower capacity is hitting revenue. "Let's just face it, this could happen two or three more times by end of the year," Vallin said. "If it does, we've got to get really good at opening and closing turn key."SANDAG estimates 240,000 San Diegans are currently unemployed.Faisal Asseri, Cloak and Petal's Bar Director, started receiving unemployment insurance this week again after returning to work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County was officially added to California's "monitoring list" as the number of coronavirus cases across the state increases, and Gov. Gavin Newsom said he expected local health officials to comply with specific orders that include the closure of indoor dining spaces.As of Monday afternoon, San Diego County joined five other counties on the monitoring list. The other counties added to the list: Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, and Monterey.Of the state’s 58 counties, 23 of them are on the state’s list.Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, Newsom ordered counties that have been on the list for at least three days to shutter indoor operations at businesses such as restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums and cardrooms.In a tweet on his Twitter account, Newsom said:"CA is now asking Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, Monterey & San Diego to close indoor operations for:-Restaurants-Wineries-Movie theaters-Zoos, museums-CardroomsBars must close ALL operations."During his Monday news conference, Newsom said he was awaiting an order from local health officials in each of the newly-added counties to issue an order enacting the measures, which are expected to remain in effect for at least three weeks.Counties on the list were also ordered to close all of its bars, a move San Diego County had already taken ahead of the holiday weekend.
