(KGTV) — Growing up in foster care can be lonely enough and the holidays and the pandemic can make life feel even more isolating.Shatayja Beck knows that feeling all too well."I didn't know where I was going to go. I thought I was going to be there forever, and then finally somebody told me about SPA, and it just sounded like the best place, really I was like sign me up," said Beck.SPA is the San Pasqual Academy in Escondido. Roughly seventy kids live, study, play sports, and grow up on the sprawling campus."San Pasqual Academy is a first in the nation residential, educational setting for children in foster care, and it has been for ages 12 and up," said Kimberly Giardina, Director of Child Welfare Services for the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Shatayja's mom died suddenly when she was just eight years old. She was in and out of the Polinsky Childrens Center and foster homes before finding stability at SPA."SPA was the best thing for me because I was older and nobody really wanted to take me in, and I wasn't going back with my family," said Shatayja.Shatayja lived in the honor's house and played just about every sport offered. She graduated from SPA in 2017."When I was younger, I didn't even think I was really going to make it to college, I was like high school and, that's it," said Shatayja.Not only did she graduate high school, but she says she also had several college scholarship options. Currently, she's a student at Grossmont College. Her passion is photography and she works as a security guard."When I went to SPA, I felt like I could be myself, and I found out who I really was, how I wanted to dress. and how I wanted to be," said Shatayja.Perhaps, just as frightening as entering the foster system is leaving it."There is the experience of, 'good luck, you've turned 18.' The system is no longer responsible. We hope that you learn everything that you've needed to to make this transition successful," said Simone Hidds-Monroe.Hidds-Monroe knows that feeling all too well. She graduated from SPA in 2009. She and her three siblings entered foster care after their mom died. They stayed together, and all graduated from the academy."There is such a relief when you meet another former foster youth. It's like this unspoken connection that you really understand," said Hidds-Monroe, who is now the associate director of youth services for Just in Time for Foster Youth.The organization serves more than 800 youth a year, ages 18-26. The goal is to help them succeed once they age out of the foster care system. "The biggest thing for us is connections. We want our youth to know there is a community here to support them, for every goal and every opportunity they want to have, we're cheering for them," said Hidds-Monroe.Making those connections can be more challenging during the pandemic.The group recently held two holiday drive-thru events, where youth picked up gifts, food, school supplies, or home furnishings."We're really asking the community to step forward and help us bring the holiday joy and some gifts and love to our youth at this time," said Hidds-Monroe.Giardina says when the pandemic first hit, the county saw a decrease in people willing to become foster parents, but offering virtual training and education has made it easier for people to help."The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, and kids in foster care have already come from traumatic experiences and already have had a difficult time," said Giardina.Hidds-Monroe says she's dedicated to making sure the youth succeed."I'm an ally for my peers, and I am very passionate for my youth in foster care to make sure they have a positive experience. EXETER, N.H. — A voter bared her arms, and more, after she was told she couldn't wear an anti-Trump shirt at a polling place and responded by whipping it off and doing her civic duty topless.The woman wore a "McCain Hero, Trump Zero" T-shirt at the polling place in Exeter, New Hampshire, on Tuesday's primary election.In New Hampshire, voters are not permitted to wear any "campaign material" inside a polling station. Moderator Paul Scafidi told the woman that she could not wear the shirt while voting, according to Sea Coast Online.Scafidi said the woman asked why another woman in the polling station was allowed to wear a shirt with an American flag while voting. Scafidi said he determined that an American flag shirt did not constitute as electioneering — a judgment call that he, as the moderator, is required to make.Scafidi then told Sea Coast Online that the woman asked if she should take her shirt off, even though she was wearing nothing underneath."I said, I'd rather she not," Scafidi said, according to Sea Coast Online. "But she took it off so fast, no one had time to react. So the whole place just went, 'woah,' and she walked away, and I let her vote. She could've just gone into the hallway and turned it inside-out."The woman could have faced public indecency charges, but Scafidi said he chose not to involve the police because he "didn't want to escalate the situation further." So back then, we could get traveling nurses, we could get registry nurses, we could hire more nurses locally," Van Gorder said. "Today, this is a national situation and we cannot recruit travelers, we cannot recruit registry nurses, and unfortunately, a number of our healthcare providers are also getting sick."Van Gorder said the county has 24 staffed ICU beds left, out of about 670 available. He added that as hospitals get full and resources are strained, the type of care for anyone needing hospital care will change to crisis care.The top two floors of the Escondido hospital have been set up to serve as an FMS site. The site includes 202 beds that can be used for patients that don't require ICU care. The site could take in patients from other county hospitals that become overwhelmed, Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health, told ABC 10News a few weeks ago."It could be beds that we would offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet," he said.California's cumulative ICU bed capacity hit 1.1% on Wednesday, with the Southern California region at 0%. Three other regions were also under the state's regional stay-at-home orders activated after a region dips under 15% ICU capacity.San Diego County reported 348 coronavirus ICU cases on Wednesday and an additional 2,598 COVID-19 cases.Van Gorder said the county and hospitals project that hospitalizations will continue to grow and peak on Jan. 10, 2021, with about 1,827 patients, and ICU cases will peak on Jan. 11, with about 483 patients."Today, the governor announced the federal medical station at Palomar Medical Center is going to be activated. (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested in connection with the death of a man in an Escondido apartment, police said Wednesday.At around 7 p.m. Tuesday, a woman called 911 to report that her roommate was dead in an apartment in the 600 block of N. Quince Street, according to Escondido police.Responding officers arrived to find an unidentified man “unresponsive with obvious signs of trauma,” police said.The man was pronounced dead at the scene.Escondido police added: “The woman who had called 911 was present at the apartment. Officers determined that she lived at the apartment with the deceased man. They have been involved in a dating relationship and she had been recently arrested for domestic abuse charges. She was out on bond after being booked into jail on that previous case.”Amid their investigation, police arrested the woman -- 52-year-old Shelley Reaves -- on suspicion of murder and booked her into the Vista Detention Facility.No other details were released as the incident remains under investigation.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Escondido police. 1109
