LHASA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed in a strong earthquake that jolted a county near Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on Monday, the rescue headquarters confirmed early Tuesday morning.     The previous "at least 30" death toll was inaccurate due to unauthoritative sources and needs further check.     Rescuers arrived at Yangyi Village, the worst-hit site in Gedar Township of Damxung County, late Monday night after repairing the road once paralyzed in the 6.6-magnitude tremor.     At least 147 houses in Yangyi and villages in a neighboring county collapsed. Rescuers recovered nine bodies from the debris, and 11 people were seriously injured while eight others received light injuries, Hao Peng, deputy chairman of the autonomous regional government and head of the rescue command, told Xinhua.     More than 600 soldiers, police officers, firefighters, traffic, medical and geological experts were rushing to the quake zone.     Food, drinking water, tents and other materials had been transported to the area. Rescue operation was underway. The injured were being sent to local hospitals.     An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung,82 km from Lhasa, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. The epicenter was at 29.8 degrees north and 90.3 degrees east.     Tremors were felt in Lhasa, but no major damages were found in buildings or historical sites there, including the famed Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple.     "We examined every palace and building right after the quake and no damages were found," said Jamba Gesang, head of the management department of the Potala Palace. At level VIII, a quake can result in partial collapse of ordinary buildings.     "I was shaken for a few seconds, and lamps in the office swayed. Then everything returned to normal," Xinhua reporter Xue Wenxian said.     Classes ended early in some schools in Lhasa.     The national seismological network recorded another earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter Scale in the county at 8:10 p.m. Monday. The regional earthquake monitoring network said it had observed 15 aftershocks.     An emergency response scheme was launched across the region soon after the quake broke out. BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The parties involved in the Korean Peninsula nuclear talks held intense bilateral meetings here to pave the way for the discussions between chief negotiators, which are scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Kim Sook, chief negotiator of the Republic of Korea (ROK) delegation, met with his U.S. counterpart Christopher Hill and Chinese chief delegate Wu Dawei on Wednesday.    After the bilateral meetings, Kim told reporters that he felt neither "optimistic" nor "pessimistic" about the six-party talks, and each party needed to cool down and detail the relevant issues. TOKYO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea agreed here Saturday to strengthen trilateral cooperation for better political, economic and cultural relations.     Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung Hwan reached the agreement at the second trilateral meeting of foreign ministers from the three countries. BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday pledged its support for United Nations role of safeguarding world peace and coordinating on international issues.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the UN shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. China was a firm supporter and important partner of the UN, Hu told Ban, pledging that the country would fully participate in UN work, carry out its due responsibilities and maintain close communication and coordination with the UN.     Hu said China agreed with necessary and rational reform of the UN based on democratic consultation and would continue its cooperation with the UN as well as support for Ban's work in a responsible and constructive manner. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Communist Party of China (CPC) chief Hu Jintao has urged Party members to learn the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics more conscientiously.     Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a seminar which was participated in Sunday afternoon by members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     Prof. Yan Shuhan from the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and prof. Qin Xuan from the Renmin University of China delivered speeches at the seminar and put forward their views on applying the theory into practice.     Presiding over the seminar, Hu said the theory on socialism with Chinese characteristics is a fundamental guideline of the Party and government for social and economic construction.     Party members should understand the basic principles of the theory and use them in their practical work, he added.     Hu asked Party organs at all levels to make the theory accessible and understood by every Party member and draw long-term plans to promote and develop the theory.
