CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said. BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its concerns Thursday about a Chinese coal ship that ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a regular press briefing China is paying close attention to the incident and has taken immediate action to deal with it.China is concerned an oil spill may pollute Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Jiang said, adding that the related shipping company and Australian authorities should enhance cooperation to appropriately address the issue.Jiang said China's embassy in Australia contacted local authorities and urged them to ensure the crew's safety.Australia has taken rescue measures in time, she said, noting that the body of the ship has been kept stable and the crew are safe.The Chinese-owned, 230m-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island shortly after 05:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. DAR ES SALAAM, May 5 (Xinhua) -- "China-Africa new strategic partnership has currently reached a new level, however there is still a necessity for the partnership to be expanded and strengthened as the situation is developing," Liu Guijin, special envoy of the Chinese government on African affairs, told Xinhua here on Wednesday ahead of the plenary session of the 20th World Economic Forum on Africa.Liu said that the "eight new measures" announced by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in the Egypt in November pointed out the favorable direction in the next three years to enhance China-Africa cooperation."First, expand the current China-Africa economic and trade cooperation, which has achieved great progress in recent years. The bilateral trade volume surpassed 106.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2008. BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Revised regulations on internal management, discipline and formation regulation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) are issued Thursday to further advance the army's development and modernization.Chinese President Hu Jintao, also Chairman of China's Central Military Commission, recently signed an order to promulgate and enforce the three regulations.Unlike the previous version, the revised regulation on internal management adopted provisions on psychological counselling to armymen and provisions on their use of mobile phones and the Internet.It also modified a wide range of provisions covering oath, dress and bearings, as well as confidentiality rules, security systems and financial management.The three revised regulations are to come into force from June 15 this year.
