SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are furious about a new dress code rule for girls at one of San Diego’s most prestigious private high schools. Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley announced Friday girls would no longer be allowed to wear skirts. That led to a backlash among students, who signed a petition to reverse the change. “I think that the ban is very sexist,” said student Lana Owad. In a letter sent to parents and students, CCHS said the dress code exists to foster a faith-based environment where students are focused on learning and not outward appearances. CCHS has issued thousands of hours of detention related to the lengths of girls’ skirts. The school dress code posted online indicates girls were allowed to wear skirts or skorts that were not excessively tight or form fitting and were no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the kneecap while standing upright.“We’ve had them tailored in the past because of the restriction on it. We spent money on buying different skirts because they ban other styles for us to wear,” said student Riley Staal. Mimi Cleary said the change was prompted by adults, not students. “No one wants the skirts going, like, literally, no one wants the skirts gone. I think only the principal and teachers want the skirts gone,” said Cleary. Under the new dress code, girls can wear pants, Bermuda shorts, or capri pants. The school said girls aren't the only ones having dress code problems: the administration will also be holding boys more accountable about their facial hair next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Starting in the new year, Californians will start to see paper license plates instead of dealer decals on the backs of vehicles. A new law taking effect January 1, 2019, mandates that dealers give out temporary paper plates or permanent license plates issued by the California DMV. The law is all part of an effort to aid law enforcement as well as limit toll evasion. The plates will list information including a temporary license plate number, report of sale number, vehicle identification number, make and model. There are several reasons California lawmakers passed Assembly Bill 516. Currently, law enforcement isn't able to identify some vehicles that may have been involved in a crime, according to the DMV. Having no temporary plate also makes it difficult to investigate crimes involving vehicles. Another reason for the law is toll evasion. According to the DMV, people who purchase vehicles often delay attaching permanent plates, making it impossible to identify vehicles violating toll requirements. The DMV says toll evasion costs local governments as much as million per year. 1256

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's District Attorney's Office Wednesday says the officer who fatally shot a man who had attacked another person with a machete in Southcrest acted in self defense.After review the case and officer's actions, DA Summer Stephen's office says Officer Corey Pitts, who fired upon Vaughn Denham on Aug. 8, 2018, is not criminally liable for the shooting.Denham, 48, has reportedly attacked another person with a machete during an argument over a dog chain. The Stephen's office says a toxicology report showed phencyclidine (PCP), cannabinoids, and methamphetamine in his system."Based on these circumstances, Pitts fired at Denham in his own defense," the office's review states. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sixteen Marines were arrested Thursday morning for their alleged involvement in various illegal activities ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses, according to U.S. Marine Corps officials.The unidentified Marines did not serve in support of the Southwest Border Support mission, USMC officials said."Information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation precipitated the arrests," said Maj. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sirhan Sirhan, who was convicted for assassinating Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, was stabbed Friday in a South San Diego County prison. A statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the stabbing occurred Friday afternoon at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego."Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition," the statement said.The statement did not name Sirhan, but TMZ first reported that Sirhan was stabbed and taken to a hospital outside the prison for care. The Associated Press, citing a government source, confirmed that Sirhan was the victim.Cal Fire confirmed to 10News a person stabbed Friday afternoon at the prison was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital."The suspect in the attack has been identified, and has placed in the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit, pending an investigation," a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation official said in a statement.Sirhan was convicted in the shooting death of Kennedy during a presidential campaign rally in Los Angeles. He was immediately tackled by witnesses. Sirhan was convicted of first-degree murder in 1969 and initially sentenced to death. The sentenced was commuted to life in prison in 1972 when the California Supreme Court found that the death penalty constituted cruel and unusual punishment under the state constitution, according to the CDCR.Sirhan has had 15 parole hearings and subsequent denials since he was incarcerated. He has claimed he does not remember shooting Kennedy, the Associated Press reported in 2016.At least five inmates were injured during a riot at Donovan prison one week ago. The fight broke out in the prison yard among inmates, some of whom used handmade weapons. The five injured men were taken to local hospitals for treatment.The CDCR reported 4,093 prisoners living at Donovan prison as of Aug. 28.
