The city of El Paso, Texas spent the day grieving and paying respects to the victims killed in a mass shooting Saturday. Multiple vigils were held in the city, honoring the 20 people who lost their lives after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall. Police received calls reporting a gunman in the area just after 10:30 a.m. local time.Bishop Jesus Ibarra held a special mass Sunday at La Paz Faith Memorial and Spiritual Center. “It hurts me to see the extent of violence, especially when it’s people who have nothing to do with the events that happened,” Bishop Ibarra said.The shooting hit the community hard. Twenty roses were displayed for the 20 lives lost in the attack. It’s a scene the bishop could have witnessed in person had he followed his usual routine. “That’s my Walmart,” he explained. “Every first Saturday of the month, I go stock up. Three Decembers ago, a post appeared on Facebook about a restaurant refusing to serve ten of the 35 meals it had prepared for a group of veterans. The 25 who were there, wanted to serve the extra meals to homeless vets.The restaurant, which also goes by the name DJ’s, apparently refused. Since it’s an anniversary month for that post, it was re-shared and from coast to coast people got wind of it. Many, however, decided to not read all of it. They missed the fact that the post was from 2016. Missed the fact that it was directed at DJ’s of Pueblo, Colorado. “Armed” with that lack of knowledge, they decided to come after Gary Rison’s establishment in Clark County.“Even this morning, I responded to more negativity,” Rison said. He referred to an old restaurateur adage about how one negative review can reach 100 people, but one nice review might reach only five people. This had the same kind of impact. Comments to DJ’s (the one in Winchester, not Pueblo) Facebook page came from as far away Arkansas, and Nebraska. People there claiming DJ’s actions on that night to be “shameful,” and “disgraceful.” Rison and his daughter have responded to most of the comments, and many people deleted their negative posts once they had, you know, the facts. A lot has changed over the past decades, especially with her uniform.“I wore the white dress the white shoes the white hat,” Creech remembers. “In ICU that was a nightmare. But that's the way it was, and you just worked around it.”Now, at Vascular Institute of the Rockies, she works in scrubs, which is why she was surprised to learn a nurse was denied a spot with Guinness World Records as fastest marathon runner wearing a nurse's uniform because she wasn't wearing a dress.“That's too bad,” Creech says. “I mean it should be the job that they did, not what they're wearing.”“We were excited to see that social movement and see this new outcome,” says Liz Stokes with the American Nurses Association.Stokes says the image of nursing has changed, and not just in attire.“It's more diverse than the traditional what we saw years ago,” Stokes says. “You know we're more racially and ethnically diverse.
