SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men who took part in a fatal Pacific Beach home invasion that resulted in the shotgun slaying of a resident were sentenced Friday to state prison terms.Carlos Yslas, 25, and Pedro Ramirez, 28, were sentenced Friday for their roles in the death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was shot in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue on Dec. 29, 2018.Mendivil was living at the home of another defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, at the time of his death and was killed in what court documents describe as a forcible eviction gone wrong.Yslas, who was the gunman in the incident, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison, based on his plea to a voluntary manslaughter charge. Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati said Yslas was released from prison on a residential burglary conviction about a week prior to the shooting.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingRamirez was sentenced to eight years in prison on Friday, while co- defendant Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced last year to eight years in prison. Weinberger was sentenced to three years earlier this week.Sosa pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, while Weinberger pleaded to an assault with a firearm charge.According to court documents, Sosa had previously lived at the home, but was kicked out by Weinberger following a dispute. Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told.Weinberger told police he was drugged on the night of Mendivil's killing and forced to withdraw cash from his bank to pay Yslas and Ramirez, who were brought in to assist in forcibly removing Mendivil from the home, court documents state.However, in the process of forcing Mendivil out, Yslas shot Mendivil twice. According to defense attorney Kristen Haden, Yslas believed the victim was reaching for a weapon, which later turned out to be a knife beneath his mattress.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting, San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs said. He died at a hospital about 45 minutes later, Dobbs said.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged last February for their roles in the homicide. 2430

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based owners and operators of the conservative One America News Network filed a million defamation lawsuit Monday against MSNBC and political commentator Rachel Maddow for saying on air the network ``really literally is paid Russian propaganda.'' The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court by Herring Networks Inc., owners of the One America News Network -- or OAN -- calls Maddow's on-air statements ``utterly and completely false'' because OAN ``is wholly financed by the Herrings, an American family'' and ``has never been paid or received a penny from Russia or the Russian government.'' Maddow and MSNBC could not immediately be reached for comment. Maddow made the statements during a July 22 segment of her show, in which she cited a Daily Beast article stating that an OAN on-air reporter was ``on the payroll for the Kremlin.'' Herring Networks' court papers say the reporter, Kristian Rouz, is originally from the Ukraine and started his journalism career by writing articles for Sputnik News, which is affiliated with the Russian government. According to Herring Networks, Rouz was merely a freelancer for Sputnik who selected his own article topics for submission, and his work there had no significance toward his work for OAN. OAN demanded a retraction of Maddow's statement, according to the suit, which says that an attorney for NBC Universal refuted that Maddow's use of the word ``literally'' was not simply a figure of speech. The Herrings' attorney, Skip Miller, said in a statement that ``One America is wholly owned by the Herring family in San Diego,'' who he called ``as American as apple pie.'' Regarding Maddow's statements, Miller said, ``This is a false and malicious libel, and they're going to answer for it in a court of law.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A developer is proposing to build 1,200 housing units over the now-shuttered Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club golf course.New Urban West is planning what's called "The Trails at Carmel Mountain Ranch." The plans, submitted to the city, call for 1,200 multifamily homes - a mix of for sale, and for rent - plus 111-acres of open space, including six miles of trails. The 164-acre project would make 10 percent of its rental units available for low-income households at 65 percent of the median income. "The plan features affordable and market rate housing for young families, working professionals, and seniors in very close proximity to thousands of jobs and a major transit center," said a statement from Jonathan Frankel, a vice president at New Urban West.Carmel Mountain Ranch golf course closed in 2018, amid a series of golf courses shutting down due to skyrocketing water rates. The course has since been fenced off, and is dominated by weeds and overgrowth. Now, a group of residents called Carmel Mountain United is raising concerns over the development in the golf-centric neighborhood. The neighborhood has several golf-cart crossing warning signs and its streets are named after famous courses.Troy Daum, who heads the group, says many people bought in the neighborhood because of the golf course. Now, his group is raising concerns that the development could increase traffic and make it more difficult to evacuate quickly in the event of a wildfire. Daum said New Urban West has ignored those calls and should instead focus on redeveloping area retail centers into mixed-use housing. "I don't think there's compromise with 1,200 homes," Daum said. "There's just not room in the community to handle that."Frankel says the project comes after neighborhood workshops and online surveys. A release from New Urban West notes upwards of 1,600 units could have been built on the property. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A dream became reality for a San Diego woman, but not in a good way. Jenna Evans says she swallowed her engagement ring in her sleep.Tuesday night, Evans dreamed that she and her fiance, Bobby, were facing off with "bad guys" on a high-speed train. During the struggle, Bobby told Evans that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it. So she did. Not just in her dream, but in real life. She woke to find the ring clean off her finger. "When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was," Evans said. "It was in my stomach."The next morning, Evans and her future husband went to Urgent Care, where they saw her X-rays. Her ring was clearly nestled right in her stomach.A gastroenterologist, however, suggested it would not be best to let nature run its course. Doctors recommended an upper endoscopy to remove her beloved bling."I was really happy because I don't know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it," Evans chuckled.At this point, Evans says she could feel the ring in her stomach and it was starting to become painful.Doctors safely removed the ring from her intestines and returned the jewelry to Evans — well, to Bobby for safe keeping, at least. Bobby eventually gave Evans her ring back."I feel very grateful that I got it back, and that this is a happy and funny story," Evans said. It was a crazy adventure that gave new meaning to "A Sparkling bride, inside and out."She says she now takes the ring off when going to sleep.The couple will get married in Evans' home state of Texas, hopefully with the ring in hand, next May. 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City Heights elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following reports of gunfire in the area.San Diego Police responded to the call of shots fired near Colina del Sol Park at 5319 Orange Avenue just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.Fay Elementary - located across the street from the park - was placed on a precautionary lockdown, according to police. The lockdown was lifted within an hour.Two individuals were detained following the reports, but police did not confirm whether they were associated with the shooting. Police did say they are searching for one more individual.Police recovered shell casings at the scene, but would not say how many were recovered. No injuries have been reported.SDPD officers were on the scene Wednesday afternoon investigating.  840
