Public speaking is one of the biggest fears. About 7 percent people in the U.S. have the fear, that's about 27 million Americans. But there are some steps you can take in your everyday life to beat the fear for good.This is the moment Anyeik Artis and all her classmates will see if she's overcome her fear of public speaking."My name is Anyeik and my speech is about what we think we are," Artis says. "It's all about the mindset you choose to be in that will determine your outcomes in life."She stuck to her notes and gave personal examples."My goal in life was to go to college when I was in high school," Artis explains.Eventually the notes were gone and the speech ended much differently than it began."Not everybody is going to be the same because our thoughts are so different," Artis says in closing. "So thank you."She made it back to her seat relieved."I kept shaking but I got through it.," Artis says.Then, she waited for feedback."There was way less fidgeting," said Oldile Fazioni, Artis' teacher at Community College of Denver. "You were more present, you were really looking at us strong with the strong eye contact."Fazioni helps her students overcome their fears. The first step is a starting exercise, where students make eye contact with their audience one person at a time."Try to change the speech from a speech to the audience to a conversation with that person," Fazioni says.Next, she teaches students to be in touch with their bodies. It works by consciously feeling your hands and feet to take attention away from the fears in your mind and become more present. But the biggest key she says is concentrating on content."The moment that the student is able to move away from the mind and into the verbal message and making sure that it is clear I see a huge shift in the confidence of the students," Fazoni says.And lastly, celebrate! Recognize how far you've come, even if you're not perfect."Let's value the mistakes just as much as we value the success because through the mistake or through their fault we really learned to become better speakers," Fazioni says.Fazioni says you don't have to be in a class to try these things out. You can practice in small group conversations. So when that big speech does come, you'll be ready.      2309

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University released a video on Tuesday that shows how droplets disperse into the air from a person’s mouth.The researchers used different kinds of masks to analyze the disbursement of the droplets. The researchers also showed that without a mask, six feet of distance might not be enough to avoid infection.The FAU team tested a single-layer bandana-style covering, a homemade mask that was stitched using two-layers of cotton quilting fabric consisting of 70 threads per inch, and a non-sterile cone-style mask that is available in most pharmacies. The team used a mannequin, Laser lights and synthetic fog to help visualize the spread of the droplet from a cough..The researchers said that stitched quilted cotton masks worked the best in the simulation, with droplets from emulated coughs traveling just 2.5 inches from the mask. By comparison, without a mask, the droplets moved more than 8 feet, with some droplets traveling up to 12 feet during a heavy cough. The researchers also noted that the droplets remained suspended in midair for up to three minutes in the simulated environment.“We found that although the unobstructed turbulent jets were observed to travel up to 12 feet, a large majority of the ejected droplets fell to the ground by this point,” said Dhanak. “Importantly, both the number and concentration of the droplets will decrease with increasing distance, which is the fundamental rationale behind social-distancing.”FAU said that droplets from a cough traveled 3 feet, 7 inches from a bandana; 1 foot, 3 inches from a folded handkerchief; and 8 inches from a cone-style mask.“Preliminary results from our experiment reveal that significant concentrations of small particles from a turbulent jet such as from a heavy cough/sneeze can linger in still air for more than one minute. It only took the particles a couple of seconds to travel 3 feet; in about 12 seconds it reached 6 feet and in about 41 seconds it reached around 9 feet,” said Siddhartha Verma, an assistant professor in FAU’s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering.Last week, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that 33,000 American lives would be saved between now and October 1 by near universal wearing of masks.Last month, a study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective.The CDC issued guidance in April to recommend mask wearing while in public, which has become a requirement to enter retail establishments in more than a dozen states.The CDC's guidance stressed several points: That wearing a face covering is not a substitute for social distancing, and that the public should not use medical or surgical masks. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) – It was a nightly ritual. Steve Faught would put his dog, Riley, in his old Ford pickup and take him to a nearby baseball field to play fetch.  On his way Thursday night, he stopped by Stage Stop Liquor and Gas to pick up a six-pack of beer. But he never made it to the field. Faught was found at the gas station with a major injury to his neck, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He was airlifted to a hospital for surgery but did not survive. His older brother, Jerry Faught, described him as funny, with a warm personality. “To him, life was a good place,” he said. “He was just the kind of person you’d like to know.” Faught heard the news from Steve’s wife, who called him at his home in Portland. His older brother instincts kicked in. “I couldn’t help him. I couldn’t save him. That’s hard,” he said. Homicide detectives are trying to piece together what happened and what led up to the altercation, but as of Friday morning they had not been able to locate any witnesses or surveillance video. The suspect, 26-year old Jarrett Wishnick, has been arrested for murder. 1169

President Donald Trump visited Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday which was the site of both peaceful protests and riots last week following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.The protests have mostly been peaceful in the city in the last few days. However, some politicians fear that Trump's visit could stoke embers of emotion and spark more violence in the nights to come.Trump's visit took place against the wishes of both Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and Kenosha Mayor Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian — both Democrats — who say that emotions in the city are still too raw."We want everything to calm down," Antaramian said in a press conference on Monday. "We want to give people an opportunity to talk before the president comes into town."There did not appear to be any violence or unrest upon Trump's arrival. Dozens of his supporters lined streets in Kenosha to see his motorcade, and Blake's family held a community gathering near the site of the shooting.During his visit, Trump praised law enforcement at a security roundtable for keeping peace in the city in recent days, and urged lawmakers in other states to lean on federal support in times of unrest. He also visited with business owners whose properties were damaged or destroyed in riots.Trump said Tuesday that he did not plan to meet with Blake or his family during his visit, saying it would be best if relations with the family were handled "locally." He did say he planned to have a conversation with the family's pastor. The President said Monday that he spoke with the family's pastor in the hopes of setting up a call with Blake and his family, but said the pastor requested a lawyer be on the line during the call, which he thought was "inappropriate." 1729
