SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California’s superintendent of schools announced a new plan to study the role and impact of police on school campuses.During a Wednesday morning virtual press conference, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said he wants to speed up research in examining how police at schools affect students.“We need to set clear standards that police officer should never be dean of students or disciplinarian for student behavior,” Thurmond said.Schools may still need police on campus to respond to situations such as active shooters or bomb threats, Thurmond said, but he was clear that officers should never treat students like criminals.In the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and as people across the U.S. call for systemic change in the role police play in all of our lives, Thurmond is organizing a task force to study police presence at schools.“We should have more restorative justice programs, focus on de-escalation, programs that focus on intervention that can be done by those who have the ability to use peacemaking skills to reduce violence,” Thurmond said.San Diego County is no stranger to police-related controversy on local school campuses.In 2016, a fight at Lincoln High School ended with school police using Tasers and pepper spray on students. One officer and four students were hospitalized, and two students were arrested.In 2018, a campus police officer slammed a student at Helix High School onto the ground. That student later filed a lawsuit over the incident.Now, a Change.org petition is calling for the San Diego Unified School District to close its district police department, saying, “Policing schools creates a toxic school climate that attenuates the school-to-prison pipeline and is not necessary to cultivating school safety.”As of Wednesday, the petition has just over 1,800 signatures.Federal data shows a slightly disproportionate amount of arrests of minority students within San Diego Unified School District. Data shows 66 percent of arrests are of Black or Hispanic students, even though they only make up 56 percent of the school population.Thurmond said he wants to look into that issue specifically.“To make sure that any police officer who is on campus is someone who wants to be on campus, who has chosen to be there, not just been assigned. And there will be training for them in implicit bias, de-escalation and understanding youth development,” Thurmond said.SD Unified officials have not responded to the petition or Thurmond’s comments, but on the district website, officials said having officers on campus allows them to build relationships with students, teachers, and staff, and better serve the school community. 2737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California has some of the most expensive gas in the entire country, and a new study by GasBuddy also claims the Golden State also has some of the most aggressive drivers.According to the study, California ranks number one with most aggressive drivers followed by Connecticut and Georgia.The study claims those aggressive habits are also costing Californians cold hard cash. GasBuddy says aggressive driving habits costs an additional 7 per year in fuel.The habits include hard braking, speeding and rapid acceleration.Further finding indicate that the more heavily populated the city, the more motorists drive aggressively.Check out the chart below:  687

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity.The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Businesses in the Gaslamp District were evacuated Saturday due to a natural gas leak. San Diego Fire crews evacuated several business in the area of Fifth Avenue and E Street in the heart of the Gaslamp District. All streets within a one block radius, from F St. to Broadway and Fourth Ave. to Sixth Ave., have been blocked off. Police are asking pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.No injuries were reported.
