SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- While most beaches in San Diego County are entirely closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Coronado, Torrey Pines, and Oceanside do not have hard-closures. However, most of the visitors at the still-open beaches were doing their part in maintaining proper social distance. Get out and stretch out. Many people found one of the rare places in San Diego County to do so: Coronado Beach. "All the gyms, and everywhere you can get a little exercise, are closed," Manhattan Beach resident, Ryan Darling said. "I actually came out just to stretch my legs a little bit and get out of the house to do some lunges." Darling is visiting a friend in Coronado. He was worried the beach here would be packed. But many are finding it to be pretty mellow. "It's just as nice to see that it's not crazy on this nice, beautiful Saturday," Coronado resident, Brenda Byrnes said. Coronado Lifeguards periodically make announcements over the loudspeakers to take enforcement to the next level. "We're trying as hard as we can to keep the beach open. So we ask that you guys remain in motion," lifeguards said. If they see anyone loitering, sunbathing, or quietly sitting on the sand, they tell them to get a move on. It's a message most people seem to be following. "I went the whole way, and we just wave hi to one another from six feet and keep going," Darling said. The same goes for Oceanside. The beaches there have similar soft-closure rules. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. Congregating is strictly prohibited. These cities are following State guidelines practiced at Torrey Pines State Beach. Parking lots are closed, so visitors must hike into the beach. But some fortunate folks found street parking. "It's our lucky day!" visitor, John Hughes laughed. "Get out, get some sun, and then we'll go back home and hibernate."So far, visitors at the still-open beaches seem to be taking social distancing seriously. It's because if they do not, they know this luxury may be taken away at any time. "I hope they remain open, and to be used just the way they are right now," Byrnes said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A former North County Boy Scout said he is one of hundreds of sexual abuse victims in a new lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America.Matt, who only wanted to use his first name, joined the Boy Scouts when he was around 13 years old. He really loved the outdoor activities.“We had a lot of great trips… a lot of good camp outs,” Matt said. Roughly a year after he joined, things changed.“We had an assistant Scoutmaster that started to join us on trips,” Matt said. “He just started spending more time with kids and a lot of these bad things started to happen.”The new lawsuit alleging sexual abuse was filed on behalf of one former scout in Pennsylvania. The total number of alleged victims in this latest wave of accusations is more than 850, according to attorney Andrew Van Arsdale. Matt is one of them.“Our oldest [alleged victim] is in his late 80s. Our youngest is 14-years-old,” Van Arsdale said. Van Arsdale is one of the lawyers involved in the group “Abused in Scouting.” The group came together after hearing the Boy Scouts were potentially filing for bankruptcy. They began a campaign telling victims that they no longer have to be in hiding. “It’s time to come forward. It’s the right time now and the response was overwhelming,” Van Arsdale said. He said he is “100 percent” expecting more people to come forward. For Matt, time has not healed all wounds of what he said the assistant Scoutmaster did to him.“He had come at me on multiple times. I think the first time, I was able to get him away from me,” Matt said. He was able to get away the first time, but not every time. He specifically remembers a camping trip in Camp Pendleton.“I woke up and he had gotten his hands on my genitals and massaging me… I woke up and pushed him off,” Matt said. “I think I just really kind of put it at the back of my head and just tried to forget about it.” But he didn’t forget and he said other kids in his troop were also abused by this man. In a statement, the Boy Scouts of America said that they “believe victims” and that the organization has “taken significant steps over many years to ensure that we respond aggressively and effectively to reports of sexual abuse.” The full statement can be read here. For some, it’s too little too late. “They knew it was a problem for a long time,” Van Arsdale said.“Anytime you got kids with adults having access to kids, you better make sure those adults are reliable, good people. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The gradual reopening of San Diego beaches continues the week of June 8. Parking lots are next on the list to reopen.Starting Monday, June 8, park and water use are open at East and West Mission Bay Parks with no restrictions. Mission Bay parking lots are open. Fiesta Island is open to pedestrians, dogs and cyclists as of June 8 but will not open for cars until July 6.Starting Tuesday, June 9, all San Diego piers and boardwalks are open. Plus, San Diego beach parking lots are open with no restrictions.Friday, June 12, Balboa Park Central Mesa opens, along with Balboa Park parking lots.While beaches are officially open for both active and passive activities, social distancing should still be practiced, meaning people should only sit near people who they live with. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The fight continues fort tenants in Oak Park who say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. The group met with the San Diego Housing Commission Friday morning. Many of the tenants are seniors living on a fixed income. Some of them say they've already seen their rent increased twice this year. "There doesn't seem to be any protections for people like us," says one of the tenants who spoke during Friday's board meeting. "We're on a fixed income; we get a two percent raise every year. My rent was raised by 50 percent."Olive Wood Gardens is a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. Tenants say they are scared for their future. "I don't know what to do now," says Kathy Blackstock. "I don't think I can go back to homelessness."They're not only asking help from the San Diego Housing Commission; the tenants are hoping the state would pass Assembly Bill 1482. Last week, a rally was held outside of the complex in support of the bill. It would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than seven percent in one year. The Senate Committee is currently reviewing the bill. The San Diego Housing Commission board says they've referred the tenants' comments and information to the staff. They will work on making some progress before next month. 1342
