(KGTV) - The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced plans Monday to close for half a day in July to conduct employee customer service training. Operation Excellence: DMV Training will “equip employees with the tools they need to handle an unprecedented volume of REAL ID applications,” said DMV officials. Californians will be required to show a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card, or passport, to fly in the U.S. starting Oct. 1, 2020. RELATED: If you don't have a star on your license, flying will become more difficult for you in 2020“The unprecedented complexity of the REAL ID requirements is what led to the idea that we needed to take the extraordinary step of closing DMV offices for a short time to make sure all employees have consistent information in order to complete the transactions successfully,” said Government Operations Agency Secretary Marybel Batjer, who is leading the DMV Strike Team. “It is a complicated transaction and we want customers to be well prepared in order to receive their REAL ID efficiently.” Training sessions for more than 5,000 workers will take place at 183 DMV field offices, commercial drive test centers, and industry business centers statewide. “Our employees are at the heart of every transaction we perform,” said Kathleen Webb, DMV acting director. “With this commitment to training, we can ensure they have the proper tools, knowledge, and experience to provide excellent customer service to the people of California.” RELATED: California's REAL ID requirements now accepted by government“Field offices need to be prepared for at least a doubling of customer volume as the enforcement date approaches,” said DMV officials. The DMV offices will be closed the morning of July 24 and open for business at 1 p.m. DMV Call Centers will remain open during the closure. Customers will also be able to conduct business online. Operation Excellence is part of the DMV Reinvention Strike Team, created by Gov. Gavin Newsom to modernize the agency through transparency, speed, and customer satisfaction. 2076

A 66-year-old woman was arrested and preliminarily charged Wednesday with driving into protesters in Indiana.According to the Associated Press, the woman police arrested was Christi Bennett.Hundreds of people were rallying and protesting through Bloomington Monday, following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Police say an electric scooter had been left in the roadway and a red Toyota passenger car drove up to it. A male passenger then got out and threw the scooter out of the lane of travel. That's when police say a woman approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood. The vehicle then began to accelerate, according to police, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car. A man then grabbed the car and clung to the side of it as it accelerated rapidly on Walnut Street. The man and woman remained on the vehicle until it turned abruptly onto eastbound 6th Street, throwing both people off, according to police.Police say the owner of the car was staying at a motel in Scottsburg, Indiana. They traveled to Scottsburg and detained the man and woman involved. The man was interviewed and released. Bennett was transported to the Bloomington Police Department to be interviewed, but she and her legal counsel declined to provide a statement. She was arrested on the following preliminary charges:Criminal Recklessness, level 6 felony (two counts)Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, level 6 felonyLeaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Bodily Injury, class A misdemeanor.Bennett was released on a 0 cash bond within a couple of hours, the AP reported.Bennett has not been formally charged. The Associated Press contributed to this story.WRTV's Matt McKinney first reported this story. 1896

(KGTV) - Neighbors who live off a quiet Rancho Pe?asquitos road say they are fed up with crime, litter, and abandoned cars steps from their front doors.Danielle Salice, who lives in the area, says the region's high cost of living is keeping her from moving. "I'm paying good money to live in a place that's beautiful, San Diego, let alone owning my condo," she said. "But I'm not being able to use my neighborhood."Salice lives in a condo complex at the end of Azuega Street in Rancho Pe?asquitos. She and her neighbors are reporting drug paraphernalia, abandoned cars, and a series of car break-ins. On Friday, there were two piles of broken car glass in the road. One man who declined to give his name said his car was broken into last month, and his daughter's softball gear was stolen. Salice said it's an ongoing problem on the road. "As a single-family person, I don't feel safe walking on this street," she said. Here's the problem - Azuaga Street is a long straightaway largely hidden from view, just south of the 56. There are no homes on the final stretch of the road - one side has a retaining wall up a hill. The other is mostly brush. It ends at a condo complex called Terra Vista. "There's no lighting, and this is an easy place to hide," Salice said. Salice said her HOA has discussed adding a gate to the complex and a guard, but they are cost prohibitive. She says she would like to see more police patrolling the block. A look on Crimemapping shows seven reports in the last six months, including vandalism, car break-ins, and petty theft. A San Diego Police spokesman says it's vital people report crimes or suspicious activity. That can lead to increased patrols. San Diegans can also request extra patrols online. Residents can use the city's Get It Done app to report cars left at unrestricted spaces for longer than 72 hours.  1952

(KGTV) - New details have been released in the moments leading up to a small plane crash in Scottsdale, Ariz., that killed six people this month. The National Transportation Safety Board report said video showed the plane take off from Scottsdale Airport on April 9, its wings "rocking during and shortly after."A traffic camera also recorded the plane in a left bank executing a left turn about half a mile from the airport. As the plane made the turn the plane started to descend.RELATED COVERAGE: 521
